A Comparative Economic Study of Boro Rice Cultivation Under BRRI Ricommended Package and Farmers Management Practices

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study examine to determine the costs, returns, and relative yield and financial benefits between two management practices of BRRldhan-29 Boro paddy production in Sherpur district of Bangladesh from the viewpoints of BRRI recommended package and farmers' management practices. In total 80-sample farmers of which 40 were demonstration plot (DP) and 40 non demonstration plot (NDP) were purposively selected for the study. Primary data were collected the from selected farmers. A simple cost and return analysis was done to determine the profitability of BRRIdhan-29 Boro paddy production. The major findings of the present study were that NDP required 26% higher amount of seed due to closer spacing. It received Urea 202 kg, TSP 123 kg, MP 67 kg and Gypsum 40 kg per ha which were lower than the recommended doses. Production cost was 5.22 % higher in DP due to better management practices and higher use of fertilizers compared to NDP. However, it influenced the farmers' income significantly, DP and NDP produced average grain yields 6660 and 5445 kg/ha respectively. Thus, a wide gap in yield (1215 kg/ha), gross return (Tk.9713/ha), gross margin (Tk.8684/ha) and variable cost (Tk.1029/ha) were observed. It is noted that farmers obtained much higher benefit by applying recommended practices (BCR2.47) compared to conventional practices (BCR2.20).

Objectives:

To estimate the yield and profit gap of the irrigated boro rice production under BRRI recommended and farmers' conventional management practices.

Methodology:

Data for the present study were collected in 2005 from selected farmers of six villages namely Munshir Char, Kamarer Char, Baghar Char, Charsherpur and Bolayer Char of Sherpur district in Bangladesh. A total of 80 BRRldhan-29 Boro paddy producer comprising 40 farmers' practices and 40 demonstration plots following recommended practices were purposively selected for collection of primary data. Monitoring techniques for collecting data were done with the help of a pre-designed schedule. All the activities of crop production were monitored and recorded in the schedule. The information of 40 "demonstration plots (DP)" was collected from the Block Supervisor of Agriculture Extension Department. For "Non-Demonstration Plot (NDP)" the sample farmers were randomly selected from the growers. Data were collected with the help of a pre-tested, pre-designed questionnaire. The data were summarized, edited and analyzed through tabular method using average, ratio, percentages etc.
