Genetic Diversity Amongst Fifty Sunflower (helianthus Annuus L.) Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A set of 50 sunflower genotypes collected from 11 widely different geographical regions of the world were examined for quantitative measurement of genetic diversity. The clustering pattern of genotypes indicated that genetic and geographical diversity were not related. The genotypes were grouped in five clusters. High variability could be obtained for earliness, seeds per head, 1000-seed weight and seed yield in crossing programme involving genotypes from widely related clusters.

Objectives:

The present study was based on a quantitative assessment of genetic diversity of 50 sunflower genotypes collected from 11 countries of the world.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Oilseed Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur, during rabi season (Nov. - March) of 1992. Seeds were sown in a randomized complete block design replicated three times, each plot with six rows of three metre length. The spacing was 50 cm and 30 cm between and within rows, respectively. A random sample of ten plants 'was chosen from the central two rows of each plot for observation and records on plant height, stem girth, days to flowering and maturity, diameter of head, seeds per head, 1000-seed weight and seed yield. D² values for all possible combinations were calculated according to formulae. The 8 x 8 matrix was used for simultaneous testing of significance of differences in the character means and the genotypes were grouped into clusters according to Tocher's. The criterion used for clustering was that any two genotypes belonging to the same cluster, on an average, show a smaller inter-cluster distance than the intra-cluster distances.

Achievement/Findings:

The only intra-cluster distance obtained for cluster I was low (0.0637), indicating closeness of genotypes within this cluster. Among the four clusters, inter- cluster distance was relatively higher between clusters I and III (183.250). Cluster I also had maximum mean values for most of the characters. Genotypes from these two clusters may be selected for more effective crossing programme and should result in a wide spectrum of variability leading to an overall improvement of seed yield.
