Flowering Pattern and Reproductive Efficiency in Lentil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted to investigate flower production, flowering pattern, reproductive efficiency and their relationship with seed yield in fifteen lentil mutants/cultivars. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Results revealed that the high yielding genotypes produced higher number of flowers, having longer flowering duration than the low yielding ones. It was also appeared that the high yielding genotypes had higher rate of flower production than the low yielding ones and the maximum flower production occurred within 25 days after start of flowering. However, low yielding genotypes had higher reproductive efficiency than high yielding ones with few exceptions. Seed yield had significant positive correlation with pod and flower number but had negative relation with reproductive efficiency. This aspect may be considered for future plant breeding programme of lentil yield improvement.

Objectives:

To assess yield determining factors through studying flowering pattern, reproductive efficiency and its relationship with yield in fifteen promising lentil mutants/cultivars.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at experimental farm of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, Bangladesh with 15 lentil mutants/cultivars during the period from November 2008 to March 2009. The experimental design was randomized complete block design with three replicates. The unit plot size was 2 m × 2 m with plant spacing of 30 cm × 5-6 cm. Seeds were sown in line on 16 November 2010. The soil of experimental land was sandy loam. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 40, 80, 60 and 40 kg ha^-1 as urea, triple superphosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively. A single weeding was done at 30-day after sowing. Crop was grown under rainfed condition. No pesticide was sprayed in the crop. Five plants from each replication were randomly selected and tagged for daily count of opened flowers. Flower count began from the date of opening of first flower and continued at every day until flowering ceased. Number of flowers produced at each day was averaged over 5 days interval. Total flower production and flowering duration were later calculated from the collected data. The yield and yield attributes were also recorded from the tagged plants. Per cent pod set to opened flowers (reproductive efficiency, RE) was then estimated as: % pod set = (Number of pod plant^-1 ÷ Number of opened flowers plant^-1) × 100. All data were analyzed statistically as per the used design following the analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique and the mean differences were adjusted with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) using the statistical computer package programme, MSTAT (Russell, 1986).
