Study of Growth, Yield Attributes and Yield of Three Lentil Cultivars Under Late Sowing

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to assess growth, yield and yield contributing characters of three lentil varieties viz., BINA masur 1, BINA masur 2 and BINA masur 3 under late sowing condition. Plant height, branch number, Leaf area, TDM, LAI, CGR, RGR and NAR differed significantly at most of the growth stages among the varieties. The variety BINA masur3 showed superiority in respect of branch number, TDM, leaf area and growth parameters like LAI, CGR, RGR and NAR at most of the growth stages whilst BINA masur 2 showed the inferiority in case of leaf area, LAI, CGR, RGR and NAR. BINA masur 3 further showed superiority on yield attributes over other two varieties and it resulted in higher seed yield while showing indifference with BINA masur 2. In contrast, BINA masur 1 showed the lowest value in all yield attributes and yield under late sowing condition.

Objectives:

To evaluate some canopy characteristics and growth parameters; and to investigate the yield attributes and yield of three lentil varieties under late sowing condition.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out with three lentil varieties with a view to evaluate their growth and yield performance under late sowing condition. The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during the period from December 2005 to March 2006. The experiment comprised of three varieties viz., BINA masur 1, BINA masur 2 and BINA masur 3. The size of the unit plot was 3 m x 2 m. Plant to plant and row to row distances were maintained at 6-8 cm and 30 cm, respectively. The doses of fertilizers were: urea 40, TSP 80, MP 60 and gypsum 40 kg ha^-1. The seeds of lentil were hand sown in rows on 02 December, 2005. To study ontogenetic growth characteristics, a total of five harvests were made and at final harvest, data were collected on some morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield. The first crop sampling was done at 50 DAS and continued at an interval of 15 and 10 days up to 95 DAS. From each plot five plants were randomly selected and uprooted for obtaining data of necessary parameters. The plants were separated into leaves, stems, roots and nodules, and the corresponding dry weights were recorded after oven drying at 80 ± 2⁰C for 72 hours. The leaf area of each sample was measured by LICOR automatic leaf area meter. At harvest yield components were recorded from 10 plants of each plot. The collected data were statistically analyzed and the means were adjudged by DMRT at 5% level of significance.
