Effect of Gaba on Growth and Yield of Chilli

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of GABA on growth, yield attributes and yield of chilli cv. Narikalkhola. The experiment comprised of three levels of GABA solution viz., 1, 2, and 3 mgL^-1 water and fresh water as control sprayed on chilli plant at 30 days after transplanting. Results revealed that GABA application increased plant height, branch and leaf number, canopy area, root length, root, stem and leaf weight as well as total dry mass over control being the highest in 3 mgL^-1 concentrations. Further, GABA at 3 mgL^-1 showed the highest green fruit yield due to increased number of fruits plant^-1 and fruit size followed by 2 mgL^-1 with same statistical rank. In contrast, control plant produced the lowest green fruit yield due to production of fewest fruits plant^-1. So, GABA with 3 mgL^-1 may be applied for increased fruit yield of chilli.

Objectives:

To observe the effect of GABA on growth, canopy structure, yield attributes and yield in chilli; and to find out the effective dose of GABA for getting higher yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Field Laboratory of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from February to June 2008, to investigate the effect of GABA on growth, yield attributes and yield in Chilli cv. Narikalkhola. The experiment comprised of three levels of GABA viz., 1, 2, and 3 mgL^-1 and fresh water as control sprayed on mustard at 30 days after transplanting (DAT). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The size of the unit plot was 2 m x 3 m. Urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MP) and gypsum were used as source of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulphur, respectively. Well decomposed cowdung was also applied to the field before final ploughing. Total amount of TSP, MP, gypsum, and 50% of urea were applied at basal doses during final land preparation. The remaining 50% urea was applied as top dressing at 40 days after transplanting during flowering and fruiting start stage. The doses of fertilizers were: cowdung 5000, urea 260, TSP 200, MP 150 and gypsum 80 kg ha^-1. At harvest yield components were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically and the means were adjudged by DMRT at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

Application of GABA at vegetative stage on chilli had significant influence on most of the plant parameters. Application of GABA at 2.0 and 3.0 mgL^-1 had remarkable superiority for plant growth, yield components and yield over the other doses of GABA being the highest in 3.0 mgL^-1; and, therefore, GABA may be applied at the concentration of 3.0 mgL^-1 on chilli for increased fruit yield of chilli.
