Interaction of Copper with N, P and K in Tomato (lycopersicon Esculentum Cv. Roma Vf)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted using simulated nutrient culture solution with different concentrations of copper to investigate the uptake. behavior, interactions with nutrient elements NPK and growth of tomato plants. Copper (0.3, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/l) reduced both fresh and dry matter production of shoots and roots. The highest reduction of plant material was observed at 2.0 mg/l copper (Cu). Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium uptake were also severely decreased by copper stress. Tomato plants grown in 1.0 mg/l Cu in nutrient solution accumulated significantly higher amounts of Cu than the control, the highest being at 2.0 mg/l. Roots accumulated more Cu and restricted translocation to the shoots. Copper up to 0.2 mg/l in hydroponic solution neither affected root and shoot development nor antagonized the uptake of N, P and K in tomato plants.

Objectives:

To investigate the interaction of copper with N, P and K in tomato plants grown in nutrient solution and its effects on plant growth.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out using hydroponics containing N: 4.0, P: O.S, S: 1.3, K: 2.S, Ca: 1.3 and Mg: 0.8 mmol/l. The pH of the nutrient solution was maintained at 6.0 throughout the experiment by adding acid or alkali solution. The total concentration of the nutrient solution was 0.86%. Fourteen days old tomato seedlings of uniform size were transplanted into plastic pots containing 1.3 liter nutrient solutions. One week after transplantation, the tomato plants were exposed to Cu stresses. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with several treatments (0, 0.2, 0.3, 1.0 and 2.0 mg Cu/l) and three replicates were used. The nutrient solutions were renewed twice a week. Tomato plants were harvested eight weeks after transplantation and separated into roots and shoots, which were then well washed with deionized distilled water for 3 to 5 times and dried at 70°C for a week and ground in a grinding mill. Total N concentrations in tomato shoots and roots were determined by Micro-Kjeldhals methods following H₂SO₄ digestion. The total P, K and Cu concentrations were measured after wet oxidation, which were performed by digestion with HCIO₄-HNO₃ mixture (1 :5) as reported. Finally the results were statistically analyzed by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

Mean values of fresh and dry matter production of tomato shoot and root as affected by different levels of copper are presented. Copper increased tomato fresh and dry weight at 0.2 mg Cu/l which was not significantly different from control treatment but increasing copper levels reduced significantly both fresh and dry weight of tomato shoot and root. The maximum reduction in fresh weight of tomato shoot and root was 70 and 56%, respectively, at 2.0 mg Cu/l compared with the control. The shoot and root dry matter production was suppressed by 69 and 53%, respectively, by Cu. Visual phytotoxic symptoms (chlorotic spots) were also exhibited in tomato plants due to excess Cu in the nutrient solution.
