A field experiment was conducted at Bangabandhu Sheikh Muzibur Rahman Agricultural University campus. Salna. Gazipur during the period from April 2002 to August 2002 to evaluate the impact of potassium on growth and yield of jute. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications with seven levels of potassium viz. 0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 kg K ha with recommended doses of other nutrients. Potassium level up to 150 kg K ha-1 increased the plant height, base diameter. LAI, TDM and CGR. The significant increase in green weight with leaves. total biomass. dry fibre and stick yield was recorded with 150 kg K ha-1. The highest fibre (4.38 t ha-1) and stick yields were recorded with 150 kg K ha-1 application those were 15.26% and 15.14 % higher over 0 kg K ha-1.

To study the growth and yield of jute as affected by different levels of K.

The experiment was initiated at the research field of Bangabandhu Seikh Muzibur Rahman Agricultural University. Salna, Gazipur on April 17, 2002. The soil of the experimental site belongs to Salna series and has been classified as Shallow Red- Brown Terrace Soil in Bangladesh. Before initiation of the experiment, composite initial soil sample was collected and analyzed. The high yielding variety of jute (Corchorus olitorius Falgooni tossa (0- 9897) was used in this experiment. Textural class and organic matter were determined after Bouyoucos (1972) and Walkley and Black (1934), respectively. Total nitrogen, exchangeable Ca, Mg and K and cation exchange capacity were determined after Jackson (1973). The textural class of the soil was clay loam and soil pH, organic matter, total nitrogen, exchangeable K, available P and available S were 5.5, 1.67 %, 0.089 %, 0.22 meq/ 100 g soil, 38 ppm and 19 ppm respectively. The treatments were seven levels of potassium (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 kg K ha-1) that was applied in the form of muriate of potash (MP). Recommended doses of other nutrients viz. N, P and S were applied in the form of urea, T.S.P and gypsum @ 100.30 and 15 kg ha-1, respectively. Half of urea and full amounts of other fertilizers were applied plot wise during final land preparation on the sowing date. The rest amount of urea was top dressed at 45 day after sowing (DAS). Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications. Five randomly selected plants were uprooted from each unit plot in each sampling and sampling was done from 40 to 120 DAS at 20 days interval. For dry matter estimation the sampled plants were separated into roots, sticks, barks and leaves. These parts were then dried in an oven at 70°c for 72 hours and then weighed. For total dry matter (TDM) estimation summation of individual plant parts were taken. The leaf area index (LAI) of the crop at different growth stages was calculated using the equation as described by Radford (1967). Leaf area in each growth stage (40, 60, 80, 100 and 120 DAS) was measured by an automatic leaf area meter (AAM- 8. Hyashi Dehnko, Japan). From the five uprooted plants from each plot the plant height and base diameter were estimated at 20 days interval from 40 to 120 DAS. Green weight (kg m-2) of the above ground parts including leaves was recorded from 1 m2 area at maturity (at 120 DAS) and then the weight was converted to t ha-1. Average root weight at harvest (at 120 DAS) from the uprooted crop was multiplied by total plant population for root mass (t ha-1) and after addition of green weight (t ha-1) with this the total biomass (t ha-1) was calculated. After proper drying the jute fibre and sticks weight were recorded in kg m-2 and then converted into t ha-1. For statistical analysis IRRISTAT (Dos 3.1) and Microsoft Excel 2000 program were used.
