Effect of Gamma Radiation on Growth and Yield of Lentil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of gamma radiation on some important morphophysiological feature, yield components and yield of lentil. The four doses of gamma irradiation viz., 100, 200, 300 and 400 Gy from ⁶⁰Co Source were applied on the seeds of BINA masur 3. The experimental design was randomized complete block design with three replications. Data for growth analysis were collected at 50, 65, 80, 95 and 100 days after sowing. The yield and yield attributes were recorded at final harvest. Results revealed that the effect of different doses of' gamma irradiation was significant on all the studied parameters except number of seeds pod^-1. Results showed that plant height decreased with the increasing doses of gamma rays. TDM, LAI, AGR and RGR and yield components increased with increasing gamma rays up to 200 Gy followed by a decline and the highest performance of the above parameters were recorded in 200 Gy which resulted in higher seed yield indicating that a dose of 200 Gy irradiation to seeds of BINA masur 3 may be better dose for increased yield.

Objectives:

To study the effect of different doses of gamma radiation on growth, yield and yield attributes of lentil; and to find out the optimum dose of gamma radiation for increased lentil yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during the period from November 2005 to March 2006. Four mutants derived from BINA masur 3 were used in the experiment. The field experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The experimental field was divided into three blocks each representing one replication. Before sowing, the four doses of gamma radiation (100, 200, 300 and 400 Gy) were applied on the seeds of BINA masur 3. There were 15 plots (including control) and the size of each unit plot was 3 m x 1 m. Spacing for row to row and plant to plant were 25 cm and 5 cm. respectively. A total of five harvests (5 plants/replication/harvest) were made for growth analyses and at final harvest, some morpho-physiological, yield components and yield were collected. The first crop sampling was done at 50 days after sowing (DAS) and continued at an interval of 15 days up to 110 DAS i.e. till attaining physiological maturity. The plants were separated into leaves, stems and roots and the corresponding dry weight were recorded after oven drying at 80 ± 2⁰C for 72 hours. The leaf area of each sample was measured by an automatic leaf area meter before drying. At harvest, morphological and yield contributing characters were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

Lower doses of gamma radiation (up to 200 Gy) had positive and higher doses (upto 400 Gy) had negative effect on all the plant parameters except plant height in lentil. 200 Gy gamma radiation may be optimum dose for increased morpho-physiological parameters, yield attributes and yield in lentil.
