Culture of Thai Sharpunti (puntius Gonionotus Bleeker) in Natural Ponds with Artificial Diets

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A 56 day long experiment was conducted in rain-fed miniponds to evaluate growth performance and feed utilization efficiencies of P. gonionotus fed artificial diets. Four iso-nitrogenous (35% protein) diets were formulated to evaluate full-fat soybean as fish meal substitute. Soybean meal was included at 20%, 30% and 40% level to progressively replace fish meal keeping the level of mustard oil cake and sesame meaiconstant in all the diets. Fish meal was the principal source of protein in diet 1 and was considered as the control. There were four treatments each with two replicates and each pond was stocked with 100 fish with a mean initial weight of 2 .18g. The fish were fed twice a day at the rate of 5% of their body weight. The best growth and feed utilization efficiencies were obtained with fish fed diet 2 (containing 30% fish meal, 20% soybean. 10% mustard oilcake and 10% sesame meal) followed by diet 3 and diet 1. The lowest growth was observed with fish fed diet 4. The specific growth rate values Vl(ere fairly high ranging from 5.39 to 5.81.

Objectives:

To formulate fish feed using locally available feed ingredients and to evaluate the growth performance of P. gonionotus on formulated diets in pond condition.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted for 8 weeks. Eight earthen miniponds, each of size 30 m2 were used for the growth trial. The water depth was maintained at a maximum of 1.2 m using screened PVC over flow pipe on the bank fixed1.2 m above the pond bottom. The ponds were rain fed and the ponds were of about 10 years. Fingerlings of Thai sharpunti (P. gonionotus) were collected from Fresh Water Station, Fisheries Research Institute (FRI), Mymensingh. Fingerlings were acclimatized before transportation to the experimental ponds.Feed formulation and preparation: Fish meal, soybean (Glycine max), wheat flour, mustard oilcake (Brassica juncea) and sesame (Sesamum indicum) were used as feed ingredients. All the ingredients were procured from local market and were finely ground to pass through a 0.5 mm sieve. The proximate composition of the dietary ingredients . Four iso-nitrogenous diets were formulated to contain 35% protein. Attempts were . made to progressively repl.ace fisb.meal by using soybean meal keeping the amount of both mustard' oilcake and sesame meal constant in all the experimental diets. Fish meal was used as principal source of protein in diet 1 and was considered as the control. Wheat bran was used as carbohydrate source .

Achievement/Findings:

The result of the study demonstrated that up to 40% of the dietary fish meal in P. gonionotus could be replaced by soybean and results of the pond trial produced a better yield for Thai sharpunti with this formulated feed.
