The Brahmaputra alluvial  soil (Digarkanda series)  were incubated at 30°C and at mo1sture levels  of 50% and 133% mwhc (Maximum water  holding capacity) mixing with 50 ppm each of Fe. Cu. and  Zn and  20  ppm  each  of  B, Co, and  Mo  to  study  the impact of  micronutrients on  the  available nitrogen after  3, 6  and 12 v:-'eeks of incubation. During aerobic  condition (50% mwhc) all the  addedelements  decreased ammonification  (NH4·N)  after   all  periods except  Zn  and   Cu.  Zinc   increased ammonification after  6  weeks and  Cu after  12  weeks. Nitrification (N03-Nl on the  otherhand wasstimulated by Cu. B and Mo  after 3 weeks. With other  added elements nitrification was much favoured after  6 and  12  weeks except Zn, which increased nitrification after  12  weeks  only. Under  anaerobic condition ( 133% mwhc) ammonification was  stimulated by  Co after  all the periods and B after  6 and12  weeks. Whilst all the added elements  favoured ammonification after  12  weeks  only. But nitrification was stimulated by all the added ele ents up to 6 weeks. A fter 12 weeks only  Fe incr eased nitrification and the  other  elements retarded.

To study the  effects of Fe, Cu,  Zn, B, Co and  Mo  on the  available nitrogen in Digarkanda soil under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions.

The  soil samples used  for this  study were  collected from Digarkanda where rice  plants are currently being grown. The  soil  samples were stored in polythene bags  after  being air dried and  ground to pass  through 20  mesh  sieve  in  Agricultural Chemistry Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural   University,  Mymensingh. The  mechanical  analysis  of  the   soil samples were performed . The initial soil nutrient status  were determined by  atomic absorption spectrophotometer (SPUNICUM 90).  Micronutrients Fe, Cu and  Zn each  of  50 ppm and  B, Co  and  Mo  each  of  20  ppm were  mixed well  with 10 gm  of  sieved soil. Micronutrients used  were iron  as green  vitrial, zinc as white vitrial, copper as blue  vitrial, boron as sodium tetra borate, cobalt as cobalt oxide and  molebdenum as molybdic acid. Analytical grade reagents were used  in all cases. These soils  were kept  in glass tubes of  size 4" height and 1" diameter  and  replicated  5 times. The  soils  were incubated for  periods of  3, 6 and  12 weeks at  30° C and  moisture levels 50% (aerobic) and  moisture level  133%  (anaerobic) were maintained.

It is indicated that ammonification process was  depressed up to weeks, except Co  after   3  weeks and  8  and  Co  after   6 weeks. Whilst  the nitrification rocess was  favoured due  to addition of  micrountrients in  alluvial soils  under  anaerobic ondition up  to  6 weeks. But  nitrification was  favoured by  Fe, Zn and  Mo  af ter  12 weeksf  incubation. The  trend on  the  release of  available nitrogen was  not similar  to  aerobic ondition.  Compared with the  control, NH 4-N  formation is  abruptly oor aerobically under all incubation periods. It is noteworthy that nitrification process was seriously affected by Fe as supplied in the form of green vitriol after  3 weeks of incubation .  The  nitrification  process in  otherwords the  release of  NOTN  was woured  by   the   addition  of   all  micronutrients  except  Zn  after   3  and   12  weeks  of1cubation.  The  significant accumulation of  No3-N under  anaerobic condition in  most of 1e cases  except Cu, Zn and Mo  after 12 weeks might be due to the  action ot special type of heterotrops .From this  study, it is almost clear1at the Digarkanda soil might be deficient in certain essential micronutrients. Replenishing such soil  with micronutrients would definitely enhance the  release of  available nitrogen.
