Intercropping of Late Jute Seed Crop with Early Planted Sugarcane

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

lnter-cropping of late jute seed crop with early planted sugarcane was studied at Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, Regional Station, Kishoregonj during 1988 to 1989. An amount of 364.25 kg/ha and 333.25 kg/ha of 0-9897 jute seed (Falgooni Tossa) with lsd 16 and Latari Jaba C sugarcane cultivar, and 382 kg/ha and 399.5 kg/ha of CVL-1 jute seed with lsd- 16 and Latari Jaba C (LJC) sugarcane, respectively, were produced without disturbing the sugar cane yield including recoverable sucrose percentage.

Objectives:

The present study was, therefore, designed to find out the effect of inter-cropping late sown jute seed with early planted sugarcane on the yield and quality of sugarcane.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at kishoregonj Regional Station under Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) during 1988-69 season. The experimental field was a medium high land with sandy loam soil. The treatments under study were (i) lsd-16 (sugarcane cultivar) sole, (ii) Latari Jaba C (sugarcane cultivar) sole, (iii) lsd-16 sugarcane + Tossa jute 1 (0-9897), (iv) lsd-16 sugarcane + Deshi jute (CVL-1), (v) Latari Jaba C (LJC) sugarcane + Tossa jute (0-9697), (vi) LJC sugarcane + Deshi jute (CVL-1 ), (vii) Tossa jute (cv 0- 9897) sole and (viii) Deshi jute (CVL-1) sole. Sole sugarcane and jute were planted at 100 cm and 30 cm apart rows, respectively. In case of inter-cropping two rows of jute seed were sown in between two rows of sugarcane. Jute seeds were harvested on 1 5 January 1 989 and that of sugarcane on 15 August 1989, respectively. Data on yield components of jute seed crop viz., plant stand, plant height, branches and pods per plant, and seed weight were recorded from 1 0 randomly selected plants. In case of sugarcane number of tiller, number of millable cane, and recoverable sucrose percentage were recorded and they were statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

In the present experiment, late sown jute seed crop as an inter-crop in sugarcane did not adversely affect the yield of sugarcane rather it improved the cane yield. Besides, an additional yield of jute seed was obtained which could minimize the scarcity of jute seed in Bangladesh. The benefit-cost ratio was maximum with inter-cropping of tossa jute (cv. 0-98971 in sugarcane (cv. lsd-161 followed in order by inter-cropping of tossa jute (cv. 0- 98971 in sugarcane (cv. LJC), deshi (cv. CVL-1) in sugarcane (cv. LJC) and deshi jute (cv. CVL-1) in sugarcane (cv. lsd-16). All inter-cropping systems of jute seed crop in sugarcane were more income generating ones than their sole cropping practices . Therefore, the farmers can obtain an additional income from the same land allocated for early sugarcane production
