Shrimp Processing in Bangladesh: Some Socioeconomic Issues

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Various socioeconomic aspects of shrimp processing from coastal areas of Bangladesh were studied. In respect to number of labor in the shrimp depots (landing centres), on an average 3 persons were involved per depot as r egular staff, and 5 persons as temporary staff. About 90 per cent of the temporary staff working in depots and processing plants were female. Daily wage of temporary staff was ranged from Tk 12.0 in Cox's Bazar to Tk. 22.0 in Satkhira district. Icing and beheading of shrimp were the main cost items in the depot operation. Money lender was the major credit source to the depot operators. At present, processing plants can utilize only 13 per cent of their capacity due to short supply of raw materials.

Objectives:

To identify the socioeconomic aspects of shrimp processing in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Two most important shrimp producing regions in the coastal areas of Bangladesh, Khulna and Cox's Bazar were selected for this study. A draft survey schedule was prepared in conformity with the aims and objectives of the study. A pretest was conducted with the draft schedule by trained investigators. The final schedule was prepared on the basis of results of the pretest.Information about shrimp depot and processing plants were collected from 19 thanas of 4 coastal districts. Various data were collect ted from randomly selected depots through direct interviewing of depot owners during the months of April to September in 1992. During data collection seasonal depots were selected rather than permanent ones. On the other hand, pretested questionnaire was distributed among 20 processing plants and information f rom 16 plants are included in this paper . Data collected covered various aspects of handling and processing of shrimp such as labour employed, wage payment,gender division, academic background of the employer, production cost, sources of capital and problems. The study work was conducted from the Brackishwater Station. Khulna of Fisheries Research Institute.The collected data were scrutinized and made ready for tabulation work. In most cases, the simple tabular form of data presentation was used. Tabulated data were analyzed and condensed by using average and percentages. Secondary data were collected from Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association.

Achievement/Findings:

The number of regular staff in Khulna was nearly double than Chittagong or Cox's Bazar. The educational background of the staff was good enough. More number of temporary staffs or hired manpower were engaged in Khulna than Chittagong. Most of them were female doing the job of beheading, cleaning, washing, grading and packaging of shrimp. For processing plants the main problem is the supply position or shortage of raw materials which consists mainly of shrimp.
