Incidence of the Rice Orange-headed Leafhopper in Irrigated Rice Ecosystem

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The incidence of rice orange-headed leafhopper, Thaia oryzivora Ghauri, was monitored by two methods, light trap and sweep net, for successive five years since 1988 in an irrigated continuous rice cropping ecosystem. In general, T. oryzivora populations were too low to cause any significant yield loss. Their abundance was relatively higher in the Boro seedbeds than that of Aus and T. Aman. Relative abundance on main rice fields were higher in the T. Aman season, particularly at the early reproductive stage, than that of other rice seasons and crop stages. Thaia oryzivorn seems to remain as a minor pest of rice and chances of significant crop damage by it are very little.

Objectives:

To study the incidence pattern of T. oryzivora in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The incidence of T. oryzivora was monitored at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute's (BRRI) experimental farm, Gazipur during 1988-1992. Adult hopper was monitored by a modified Pennsylvanian light trap with 20 watt fluorescent tube light operated every night from dusk to dawn. Diluted dichlorvos 100 EC was used as killing agent and trap catches was sorted and counted in the laboratory. The adults and nymphs of T. oryzivora in the rice seedbeds, and on grasses near the rice fields were monitored during 1988-92 and in transplanted rice fields during 1990-92 by taking sweep samples at one week intervals. One hundred complete sweeps were taken and collected throughout the year covering the Boro, Aus and T. Aman seasons. Collected insects were killed by chloroform and sorted in the laboratory.

Achievement/Findings:

Among three rice seasons, T. Aman fields had the highest populations followed by Boro and the lowest in Aus fields. The vegetative phase of the rice plant had the lowest incidence and highest at the panicle initiation to heading stages. Moderate incidence was observed at the flowering to ripening stage. During the five-year stud y period, symptoms of severe OHLH damage was observed neither in seedbeds nor in transplanted fields.
