In vivo mass rearing procedure of two pteromalidae parasitoids, Anisopteromalus calandrae (How.) and Choetospila elegans (Westw.) using Sitophilusoryzae(L.) as host was developed.  A. calandrae produced about  42,628 F1 progeny, whereas C. elegansabout 30,811 F1 progeny in a week from a single release of 1,000 female parasitoids separately. The per cent female progeny was always higher in boththe cases.

To develop a mass rearing procedure for the parasitoids, A. calandrae and C. elegans using S. oryzae as host.

Adult S. oryzae was obtained from the stock culture of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Laboratory, Institute of Biological Sciences, Rajshahi University and introduced for oviposition up to 24 hours in different Petridishes (90 mm diam) containing fresh wheatseeds. The Petridishes wereplacedin anincubator (30±0.5°C) for development of the eggs of the eggs after removal of the adult weevils. The process was continued for getting 18-20-day-old infested wheat daily throughout the whole experimental period. A.  calandrae  was  collected  from  the  culture  just  after  emergence  and subsequently allowed formating. The mated females were supplied with honey solution in wads of cotton to obtain more eggs. Then each female was supplied with 50 previously infested wheat seeds (18-20-day-old) in Petridishes (8.5emdiam) for egg laying. The ovipositing females were transferred every 24 hours to other Petri dishes containing the infested wheat seeds of the samekind. The parasitized seeds were kept in separate glass beakers (250 ml) and placed in an incubator for rearing. The mouth of each beaker  was covered  with a piece of muslin. The process was continued till the ovipositing femalesdied. The adult A. calandraee merged from the parasitized wheatseeds after 11-14 days. Adult parasitoids were separated from the weevils emerged from nonparasitized seeds. Three plastictrays (45 cm x 30 cm) each containing 10,000 fresh wheat seeds were taken. A large number of mated female S.oryzae were released in each tray for 24 hours for egg-laying. The trays were covered with another tray and placed in an incubator for rearing after removing all the weevils. This rearing was continued for five days forgetting more weevil infested wheat seeds(18-20-day-old). Large number of infested  wheat kernels parasitized  by A. calandrae  were collected  from  the stock culture and placed in different  glass beakers  until adults emerged. After emergence, subsequent mating was observed and 1,000 mated females collected by an aspirator were transferred into a large glass container with a mouth covered by muslin. Fifteen thousand S.oryzae-infested wheat seeds (18-20-day-old) were introduced three times into the container at two days interval in a week. In this way, a total of 45,000 infested wheat  seeds were introduced. Total progeny of A. calandrae were counted after emergence. The experiments  were repeated three times. The same techniques for both breeding and mass culture productions were applied in case of C.elegans. The experiments were conducted at a constant temperature of 30±0.5°C and 70±0.5% relative humidity.

There was a variation in number (progeny production), the trendin mass production of the parasitoid species, A. calandrae and C. elegans, in the laboratory found to be similar to that of the parasite S.endius on the host M. domestica as reported by Morgan et al. (1975, 1978) and Morgan (1981). They obtained large number of S.endius in a week by the introduction of two-day-old housefly pupae. Similarly, Rutzand Axtell (1979) also reared large number of M. raptor through mass culture on the same host.· In the mass culture, average 42,628.33 individuals of A. calandrae was produced in a week and incase of C. elegans the data was 30,811.67 in the same time under the same laboratory conditions. This variation in production in number was duetohigh reproductive potentiality or fecundity of A. calandrae than that of C. elegans. Islam and Kabir (1992) found 30,6 F1 progeny of Dinarmusbasalis in a week after introduction of 1000 parasitoidson Callosobruchus chinensis.
