Harvest Index of Some BRRI Varieties Under Different Fertilizer Management

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twelve modern rice varieties were grown in the Boro season to ascertain varietal response to harvest index, grain yield and biomass production under three fertilizer management, viz M1 (control), M2 (40-30-30 kg NPK/ha) and M 3 (80-60-60 kg NPK/ha ). The study revealed that the varieties BR9, BR17 and BR18 provided more grin yield compared to biomass production under low input management. Under higher management, biomass production increased more than grain yield. Therefore, these varieties would be profitable under low input management. Besides, BR18 is the only variety that yielded 4.09 t/ha grain under low (M}) management with the harvest index of 0.56. The harvest index decreased at higher management levels. On the other hand, BR1, BR3 and BR16 yielded better under higher management level. Under low management, they yielded comparatively more biomass compared to grain yield. Therefore, it would be better to cultivate these varieties at higher management levels.

Objectives:

To ascertain varietal response to harvest index due to three fertilizer treatment levels.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) farm, Gazipur, during the Boro season. The experimental location was a medium highland with silty clay loam soil type. Twelve BRRI varieties, viz BR1, BR3, BR6, BR7, BR8, BR9, BR12, BR15, BR16, BR17, BR18 and BR19, were used with three fertilizer treatments, viz; M1 (control ie, without PK ), M2 (40-30-30 kg NPK/ha) and M3 (80-60-60 kg NPK/ha) in the experiment. Urea, triple superphosphate (TSP) and muriate of potash (MP) were used for, P₂0₅ and K₂0, respectively. After the plots were laid out one third of treatment N (urea), 100% P₂0₅ (TSP) and K₂0 (MP) vvere applied as basal dose and thoroughly incorporated with the soils. The remaining amount of urea was applied as top dressed in two equal installments at 30 days after transplanting ( DAT) and 60 DAT. Besides these, 30 kg/ha S (sulphur) as gypsum was added in all plots (including control) during final land preparation.

Achievement/Findings:

The total dry matter, grain yield and harvest index of BR1, BR3, BR8 and BR16 responded positively with higher level of fertilizer management. The total dry matter, grain yield and harvest index of BR1, BR3, BR8 and BR16 responded positively with higher level of fertilizer management. The harvest index of BR7, BR12, and BR19 was more or less the same under different treatments level indicating that the grain and straw yields were increased simultaneously with the application of higher fertilizer rates. In case of BR15 both the grain yield and HI were higher at M3 level of treatment indicating that this variety could be grown profitably at high fertilizer management. On the other hand, the harvest index of BR6, BR9, BR17 and BR18 was decreased under higher fertilizer levels and suggests that in higher fertilizer level the straw yield increased in higher proportion than the grain yield
