Yield, Quality and Nutrient Content of Groundnut as Influenced by Phosphorus and Molybdenum Application

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Yield, quality and nutrient content of groundnut were evaluated as influenced by phosphorus and molybdenum application during the two cropping seasons of 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 at the research farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University. Two varieties of groundnut, BARI China badam-5 and BARI China badam-6 were used in the experiment. Phosphorus and molybdenum at the rate of 60 and 1 kg ha^-1, respectively produced significantly higher yield in both the varieties in both the years. The highest yield in BARI China badarn-5 were 3341 and 3415 kg ha^-1 for the years 2000-2001 and 2001-2002, respectively. In case of BARI China badam-6 it was 3373 and 3458 kg ha^-1 for these two consecutive years. Application of phosphorus and molybdenum significantly increased the protein, oil, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulphur content of groundnut as compared to phosphorus and molybdenum control treatment.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effects of P and Mo application on yield, quality and nutrient content of groundnut.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the research farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur during the rabi seasons of 2000-01 and 2001-02. The soil of the experiment field belongs to the Salna series and has been classified as Shallow Red-Brown Terrace Soil in Bangladesh Soil Classification System which falls under Inceptisol in Soil Taxonomy. Fertilizers at the rate of 40-55-25-2 kg of N-K-S-Zn ha^-1, respectively in the form of urea, MP, gypsum and zinc oxide were mixed thoroughly with the soil as basal before sowing seeds. Different doses of P and Mo were applied to the respective plots as per treatments after final land preparation. All necessary intercultural operations were done as and when required. Nut yield and other agronomic parameter were collected after harvest The collected data were statistically analyzed using IRRI-STAT computer package program.
