The  present study   was  done  to  explore   the  extent  of  communication with the  four selected interpersonal sources of  M-99 farmers. The  sources  were: Supervised Credit  Technician (SCT)   of   the   Rural   Bank,   Commercial  dealer   of   farm   inputs,  neighbor  and   relative,  and demonstration. The study  was  done in Bay municipality of the Philippines with 110 rice farmers for M- 99  program. Findings of  the  study  showed that  the  communication Role  Index x (CRI)  of  the neighbor and relatives was  highest (243). This  was  followed in descending order by  those  of the commercial dealer (122), Supervised Credit  Technician (87).  and demonstration (32). Thus informal personal source  was  most  Important in the  communication network at  the  village  level.  However , among the  formal person.al sources, the role of commercial dealer could  be considered as somewhat satisfactory y and those of Supervised Credit Technician and demonstration as unsatisfactory. Farmers' cosmopolite ness was significantly related  to their contact with commercial dealer and neighbor and relatives and opinion leadership had also significant relationship with their contact with neighbor and r relative. None of the  farmers' seven characteristics was related to their contact  with demo

1.  To  assess M-99 farmers' exposure to  four  selected communication sources.

2.  To  explore the  relationships between M-99 farmers' selected characteristics and their  exposure to  each  of the  source:

The   Philippines grows  rice   in  the   Wet   (May-October)  and   Dry   (November-April) seasons. The  M-99  programme began   its  First  phase in  the  Wet   season of   1973  and continued over  the  years. Data  for  this  study were   collected in  reference to  Phase  XVI when the  programme became sustained in the  farming system of  that  country.Bay municipality in Laguna province of the Philippines was  the  locale of study. TheM-99  programme covered nine  barrios (villages) of this municipality where 625 farmers grew rice  in its XVI  phase. Of  the  nine  barrios, five   were  randomly selected in  which 552 rice farmers were covered by  this  program. Twenty per  cent farmers were selected from each  village following simple random technique which gave  110 farmers as respondents. An  interview schedule was  used  as the  data  gathering InStrument. Each  of  seven characteristics of the  farmers constituted an independent variable and exposure to  each   of  the   four   selected  Interpersonal sources of  communication was   a dependent  variable.  The  extent of  which a farmer contacted  a  particular   source in  the whole season was  taken a's his exposure levei  With  that  source. A score of one, two, three and  four  were  assigned when a farmer had  a contact on  the  whole season, on  a monthly basis, on a fortnightly basis  and  on a weekly basis, respectively.

Finding shows that  41 percent of the  farmers had contact with the  Super vised Credit Technicians (SCT)  of the  Rural Bank for  message in  the  season concerned. The  highest proportion of  the  farmers ( 18o/o)  had contacted once in the  whole season, and the ·CRI of the Supervised Credit Technician was found to be  87  only. Thus, the  communication role  of  the  SCT  could be  considered  as unsatisfactory .Communication Exposure to Commercial Dealer:   78% of  the farmers had  contact with commercial dealer  and the  highest proportion (53%) had  contact on the season basis. Interestingly none  had contact on  weekly basis. The  CRI of  the  commercial dealer  was  122 which could be considered as somewhat satisfactory.Communication Exposure to Neighbor and Relative: Data show that the highest proportion (79%) of the farmers had contacted their neighbor and relatives in the  season concerned. The  CRI for  neighbor and relative became highest (243) and  thus  the  role  of  this source was considered as satisfactory.Communication Exposure to Demonstration: Several  demonstration plots of  the  Bureau of Agricultural Extension, commercial agencies and  the  International Rice  Research Institute were established within the vicinity of the  study area.
