Relative Profitability of Some Winter Vegetables Cultivation in a Selected Area of Mymensingh District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Relative profitability of potato, brinjal and radish has been determined using data from an area of Mymensingh district. Net returns were sufficiently positive for all the three vegetables both on full cost and cash cost bases. Net returns for potato were the highest and those for radish were the lowest, both on full cost and cash cost bases. Although gross returns from brinjal were the highest, cash cost and for that matter total costs were also highest resulting in lower net returns for brinjal than for potato. Since cash cost is a binding constraint, farmers should be encouraged to produce more potato for which net returns per hectare would be the highest in the area. '

Objectives:

To examining relative profitability of producing three winter vegetables: potato, brinjal and radish in a selected area of Mymensingh district.

Methodology:

Data were collected in respect of cultivation of three vegetables potato, brinjal and radish, from two villages namely Sutiakhali and Bhabakhali of Knt wali Thana of Mymensingh district. Detailed information were collected from 30 farmers who simultaneously produced potato, brinjal and radish. Such a sample permitted examination of relative profitability of potato, brinjal and radish cultivation under the same management . Data were collected over the period from February to March 1992.Cost accounting method was used for determining unit cost of production of the vegetables. The cost items considered were human labour, animal power, seeds and seedlings, manures, fertilizers, insecticides, rental value of land and interest on operating capital. Profitability was determined assuming two levels of costs: cash cost and full cost.

Achievement/Findings:

The study revealed that net returns were sufficiently positive for all the three vegetables both on full cost and cash cost bases. Among the three vegetables, net returns for potato were the highest and those for radish were the lowest, both on full cost and cash cost bases. Net returns from brinjal , both on full cost and cash cost bases, were the second highest and were indeed very close to those for potato. Although gross returns from brinjal were higher than those for potato, full and cash costs of production for brinjal were also higher resulting relatively lower net returns for the vegetable.
