Role of Poultry Litter for Increasing Nutrient Status in Soil Environment

Objectives:

To know the role of poultry litter for increasing nutritional status in soil environment.

Methodology:

A study was investigated in Gaforgaon, Saltia, Pachbag and Lamkain union of Gaforgaon upzilla at Mymensingh district to know the role of poultry litter for increasing nutritional status in soil environment during 1^st October - 31^th November, 2006. Eight broiler and eight layer farm were selected for the study i.e. 2 broiler and 2 layer farms were selected randomly from every union. One sample was collected from each farm. The litters were collected just after disposing in the pit. The collected litters were dried in an oven at 65°C for 48 hours also and then ground by a grinding machine to pass through a 10 mesh sieve and stored in small paper bags in to the desiccators. The samples were analyzed for the determined N, P, K and C and C: N ratio. Percent moisture content was also estimated from the collected sample using formula; Moisture content = (M₂-M₃) / (M₂-M₁), Where M₁ = Weight of empty container, M₂= Weight of empty container + fresh Litter weight and M₃= Weight of empty container+ Litter weight, dried at 600 C for 72 hours. The % N in soil was calculated using the method (Black 1965). Available phosphorus was determined by extracting with 0.5M sodium bicarbonate solution (Olsen et a1.l954) and developed blue colour by SnCl₂ reduction and measured the color colorimetrically. Exchangeable K was extracted with 1.0 N NH₄OAc (pH-7) and K was determined from extract by directly by Flame photometer and calibrated with a standard K curve. The percent of organic carbon was determined by wet-oxidation method as outlined by Page. The carbon-nitrogen ratio (C: N) of litters were estimated by simple calculation as C:N= Concentration, C / Concentration, N. Statistical measurements such range, mean, standard deviation and percent co-efficient of variation were used to find out the justification of the study.

Achievement/Findings:

The nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, % organic carbon and carbon - nitrogen ration in the collected poultry litter samples ranged from 2.16 - 3.96 %, 0.82 - 2.04 ppm, 0.11 - 0.31 meq/100g, 45.01 - 68.4 % and 10:1-21:1, respectively. Percent moisture content in different poultry litter samples lied within the limit 16.8 - 28.4%. So, found that poultry litter may be used successfully in crop field after balancing the C:N to about 25:1 for stopping the depletion of carbon or nitrogen that consumed as feed or nutrient by the microbes for their bacterial activities. The manorial value of the used poultry litter is much higher than other organic manure like cow-dung etc.
