 The degree of alkyl substitution and its effect on per cent  elongation, bundle  strength and moisture regain  of  etherified jute  and  cotton fibers  pretreated with 20% NaOH  were  studied. The results so obtained indicate that the degree of substitution increases with the increase of reaction time. The  per  cent  elongation of  alkyl  substituted fibre  is  found  better   with low  degree  of  substitution. Undecyl substituted fibres  have  better  per cent  elongation compared to others. The bundle  strength of substituted jute decreases while  that  of cotton increases at 1-2  hour reaction time. The  jute fibres substituted with higher  alkyl radical are more  water  repellent.

 To study some  physical properties of alkyl substituted fibres

 

Jute  fibre  (Corchorus olitorius) was   collected from  Agricultural Farm,  Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. After discarding the bottom portion ( 12 em)  the  rest of  the   fibre was  cut   into pieces (6 em). It was  cleaned manually and  dried in  the  sun.Cotton cellulose (Vatros cotton) was  supplied by Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI)Dhaka. It was  cleaned manually and  sun dried. Hexyl chloride (CH6 cl), heptyl chloride 13C7H15CI). nonyl chloride (CgH1gCI) and  undecyl chloride (C H11 23cl)  were prepared·rom their respective alcohols by using thionyl chloride Vogel .Alkali fibre was  prepared separately by immersing the  jute/c otton fibres in solution of 20% NaOH   (W/V) and  allowe:d to  ripen  for  3  hours. Excess  of  alkali   was  removed by squeezing so that  the  weight of alkali fibre was  3 times of the  weight of jute/cotton fibres. The   alkali  fibres  were   then  etherified with  n-hexyl, n-heptyl,  n-nonyl and   n-undecyl chlorides separately at  30°C for  different time  hours (lorand and Georgi, The degree of substitution of etherified jute and cotton fibres was  determined by Ziesel method . The  degree  of  substitution was  calculated from the  formula according to  Croon and Manely ..

Jute and  cotton fibres pretreated with 20% NaOH  were  etherified and  the  degree of substitution, per  cent  elongation, bundle strength and  moisture regain were studied.  It is observed from the  results that the degree of substitution increases with the  increase of  reaction time  and  the  rate  of  reaction is faster in  the   initial period of  the  reaction and  gradually decreases with  the  progress of  the reaction, which is  agreed with the  previous results obtained .It is  found that  undecyl radical is  substituted least  to both jute  and cotton fibres. It is also seen that  jute  fibre is more substituted than cotton fibre. This  is due  partly to greater non­ crystallinity in  the   jute  af}d  partly to  the  presence of  other   constituents like  lignin and hemicellulose.
