Study on Existing Status of Organic Waste Management in a Farming Community of Rangpur District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in the village Khedmotpur belonging to Pirganj Upazila under rangpur district during 1^st January to 15^thMarch, 2006. The village lies in the AEZ no. 3 Tista Meander Flood Plain. A total of 48 households were interviewed using a set of interview schedules. There were 505 households in the village consisting of 3450 persons with average 6.83 family^-1. In the farming community of the study area 24 species of crops and vegetables were observed. Biomass of field crops and vegetables was estimated through harvesting method. The livestock excreta were estimated by multiplication of the animal dung production per head and the number of head of the different livestock. Household waste, kitchen waste, ashes and use of organic fertilizer and chemical fertilizer were estimated by weighing based on farmers' opinion. The total organic was: production was unequally proportionate among medium, small, marginal and landless farmers. The total organic waste production in the farming community was 7.033 t farm^-1 yr^-1 and the total utilization was found 6.85 t farm^-1 yr^-1.

Objectives:

i) To estimate the volume of waste generation from different sources in northern region of Bangladesh,

ii) To identify the existing waste management system in North Bengal,

iii) To explore the awareness of the farmers about the soiI organic matter depletion.

Methodology:

The study was under taken in micro level concentrated in a farming community (village) named Khedmotpur village of Pirgang, Rangpur. The data for this study was collected from 48 respondents who were involved in farming system using questionnaire. The data were coded, compiled, tabulated and analyzed to accomplish the objectives of the study. Statistical means such as number and percentage distribution, range, mean and standard deviation were used to find out the relationship between selected variables of the farmers of some homestead in Khedmotpur village and total volume of organic wasted produced by different categories of farms and methods of processing and preservation of the wastes and the impact of the organic waste management on farm environment.

Achievement/Findings:

It was evident that in all spheres of production, processing and utilization of organic waste, there was no systematic planning among the farmers. The most alarming situation was that cow dung, homestead waste and crops and vegetables waste were mostly used as fuel instead of manuring the crop field. This practice led to severe environmental problem and made the total village vulnerable to soil erosion, nutrient depletion or other natural hazards. So for improving the existing status of organic waste management system some measures may be adopted. They are these: i) The organic waste pits should be prepared following agronomic technique, ii) Proper methods of processing (composting) and preservation for efficient management, iii) The farmers should be equipped with modern technique and technological devices for waste management by the relevant authority, iv) Awareness is needed to be increased among the villagers about soil degradation due to lack of sufficient organic matter.
