Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This experiment was conducted to develop chewing varieties of sugarcane at BSRI, Ishurdi, Pabna during the cropping season 2011-2012. The clone(s) showed visually attractive with good chewing characteristics were selected from different test stages. Besides, steps were taken to make possible crosses among germplasms having more or less chewing characteristics and subsequent selection were made in different test stages.From different test stages 4 clones were selected and planted in (1m × 4m) stage for evaluation. Out of 5 chewing Clones in ZYT-II, “Modhumala” and “Misrimala” performed better in all the locations of Bagherhat and Patuakhali districts. A promising clone Rangbilash has been evaluated by Field Evaluation Team of National Seed Board (NSB).

Objectives:

1. To develop location specific chewing variety.

2. To select and evaluate the different clone(s) for the development of chewing variety

Methodology:

A. SELECTION OF CHEWING CLONE(S) FROM DIFFERENT TEST STAGES: The clone(s) showing visually attractive with good chewing characteristics were selected from different test stages. Besides, steps were taken to make possible crosses among germplasms (Isd 19, Isd 24, I 95-78, I 123-84 and ZH 110-65 etc.) having more or less chewing characteristics and selection were made as per desire. All the selected clone(s) were planted in 1m × 4m test stage against one standard chewing variety. Next year, the clone(s) were evaluated on the basis of different characters (morphological and agronomical) and chewing qualities including juice analysis and estimated cane yield. The clone(s) showing better performance were selected for the next trial (4m × 4m). And the selected clone(s) will be planted in PYT, AYT, and ZYT - I, II & III against standard variety(s) in successive generations. The most suitable clone(s) will be released for commercial cultivation.

B. SELECTION OF CHEWING CLONE(S) FROM DIFFERENT LOCAL GENOTYPES : i) The available local genotypes depending upon AEZ and local choice were collected from different parts of the country and evaluated in 1m × 4m stages at BSRI, Ishurdi. The variety Isd 24 were used as the standard variety. Next year, the clone(s) were evaluated on the basis of different characters (morphological and agronomical) and chewing qualities including juice analysis and estimated cane yield. The clone(s) showing better performance were selected for the next trial (4m × 4m). And the selected clone(s) were planted in PYT, AYT, and ZYT - I, II & III against standard variety(s) in successive generations. The most suitable clone(s) will be released for commercial cultivation. ii) To release “Rang-bilash and China” at Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban they will be given trial in ZYT - I, II and III consecutively for three years against the standard variety Isd 24/ local chewing variety. iii) To release “Modhumala and Mishrimala” at Barisal, Pirojpur and Potuakhali they will be given trial in ZYT - I, II and III consecutively for three years against the standard variety Isd 24/Amrita/ local chewing variety.
