Effect of Soil Water Stress at Different Growth Stages of Rice on Yield Components and Yield

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of drought on the growth and yield of rice at tillering, booting, flowering and dough was studied in Aus season with P-2 line. The line was derived from BR3 using tissue culture technique at BINA. In dry matter production, water stress showed the maximum adverse affect at tillering stage. No panicle was formed at the plants due to stress in this stage. The highest yield reduction (68.6%) due to water stress was observed at booting, followed by flowering (46.4%) and dough (18.6%). The water stress at booting and flowering stages produced significantly lower HI values than the control but stress at dough had no significant effect on HI. The number of filled grains was seriously affected at booting stags but the size and weight of the remained grains became higher. Stress at flowering stage produced the lowest 1000-grain weight.

Objectives:

The objective of the study was to assess the effect of water stress on different growth stages of rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during the period from March to July, 1989. It was a pot culture. The soil of this experiment was collected from BINA campus. It was sandy loam in texture having pH 6.7. Each pot contained 1.6 Kg soil. Urea, TSP and MP were used at the rate of 200 Kg, 200 Kg. and 60 Kg per hectare i.e, 66, 66 and 22 mg per pot respectively. The plant material used in this experiment was high yielding somaclonal line P-2 derived from BR3 using tissue culture technique at BINA. Thirty one day old was transplanted 23.4.89. One seedling was transplanted to one pot. The experiment was conducted with the following treatments,

Treatment 1: Water stress applied at tillering stage up to 20% of soil saturation

Treatment 2: Water stress applied at booting stage up to 20% of soil saturation

Treatment 3: Water stress applied at flowering stage up to 20% of soil saturation

Treatment 4: Water stress applied at dough stage up to 20% of soil saturation

Control: No water uphold during the crop growing period.

The whole experiment was replicated 4 times and similar sets of extra pots of with same treatments were kept for destructive samples. Data on total dry matter, yield and yield components were recorded and statistically analyzed following randomized complete block design. T-tests were used to compare the means of control and stressed treatments of total dry matter of earlier harvests. But F- tests were used for the date of final harvests and means were evaluated using LSD tests.
