Study on Existing Status of Organic Waste Management in a Farming Community of Gaforgaon of Mymensingh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was under taken in poutry farming community of four union such as Gaforgaon union, Saltia union, Pachbag union and Lamkain Union under the Gaforgaon upzilla at Mymensingh during January - March, 2006 to know the organic waste management system in poultry farming communities at Gaforgaon of Mymensingh. The data for this study was collected using pretested questionnaire from 40 respondents who were related poultry in farming system. The age of the respondents ranged from 22-65 years with a mean of 40.10 years. The highest portion of the educational level was high school, SSC (both 25 %) and lowest portion was illiterate (5 %). The family size and farm size ranged from 2-11 and 0.10- 4.02 hectares, respectively. The highest portion of occupation of the respondents was poultry farming (50 %) and lowest portion was rickshaw puller (2.5%). The sources of organic waste were poultry waste, homestead wastes, kitchen waste, farmyard manure, cow dung, ashes. The generating poultry litters were 155, 135, 137 and 142 Kg/farm/day, respectively in case of Gaforgaon union, Saltia union, Pachbag union and Lamkain union. On the other hand, the homestead wastes, kitchen waste, farm yard manure and ashes ranged 105-1300, 80-300, 190-3600 and 70-190 kg yr^-1, respectively. It was observed that most organic waste products competed for utilization as fuel, organic fertilizer and other purposes. The other purposes were animal feed, animal bedding, and housing materials.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The study was under taken in poultry farming communities of four union such as Gaforgaon union, Saltia union, Pachbag union and Lamkain Union under the Gaforgaon upzilla at Mymensingh during January - March, 2006. The data for this study was collected using pretested questionnaire from 40 respondents who were related in poultry farming system. The data were coded, compiled, tabulated and analyzed to accomplish the objectives of the study. Statistical means such as number and percentage distribution, range, mean and standard deviation were used to find out the justification of the study.

Achievement/Findings:

Finding of the study following conclusion are derived it was observed that most organic waste products competed for utilization as fuel, organic fertilizer and other purposes. The other purposes were animal feed, animal bedding, housing materials etc. Some products (e.g. rice straw, wheat straw, jute stick, mustard plants, dry weeds, cow dung, leaves, branches etc.) were used for fuel. Showed the similar result and reported that dried wastes obtained from the animal farm are used not only as fertilizer but also as fuel.
