Characteristics of Grain Production in Relation to Plant Types as Affected by Planting Densities in Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In the mainstem type, LAI became greater at high planting density and the decrease in NAR with increasing LAI was less than the branch type. As a result, CGR of the mainstem type increased by increasing LAI, while CGR of the branch type did not increase by increasing LAI. The number of pods per unit area significantly increased in the mainstem type by increasing CGR during the period of flowering, while did not increase in the branch type and control. The yields of mainstem type increased with an increase in stem weight, in spite of a slight decrease in the seed-stem ratio. In contrast, the yields of the branch type increased only slightly with an increase in the stem weight, resulting from a significant decrease in the seed-stem ratio. Thus, the mainstem type appears to have a potentiality to partition dry matter to pods efficiently, consequently to attain consistently higher seed yield at high planting density in narrow row spacing.

Objectives:

The objective of the experiment was to obtain further agronomic information on the characteristics of grain production in relation to plant types as affected by planting pattern and planting densities.

Methodology:

The study was done at the experimental field of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, Bangladesh. Mungbean cultivar, Binamung-2 was seeded on 16 March 2007. Recommended fertilizer was applied during final land preparaation. Plant types used were the mainstem type and branch type. The mainstem type was made by removing branches whenever they emerged. The branch type was made by cutting the mainstem at the stage of third compound leaf expansion. A split-plot design was used with three plant types including control. Two planting densities (16 and 33/m² for branch and control, 33 and 66/m²for mainstem type) and two planting patterns (30 cm and 60 cm row with) were maintained. The dry weight of each plant organ and leaf area were determined at 35, 50 and 65 DAS. At harvest, yield components and seed yield were recorded.
