A Study of Pod and Grain Growth of Mungbean Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Pot experiment was conducted at the pot yard, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, to investigate the pattern of pod and seed growth and its relationship with yield in six mungbean genotypes. Results indicated that the maximum attainment of pod length and diameter were observed at 8 and 12 days after anthesis (DAA), respectively, whereas fresh and dry weights of pods and seeds were at 16 DAA. The pod and seed growth rate increased linearly until 14-16 DAA followed by declined. Pod and seed growth rates enhanced in larger pods and seeds as compared to small seeded ones. But yield performance per plant was poor in plants with bold seeds due to fewer pods/plant. On the other hand, grain filling duration was higher in high yielding genotypes compared to low yielding genotypes indicating seed filling duration is more important in determining grain yield than seed growth rate. In contrast, pod and seed number, and yield were negatively associated with pod and seed size indicating pod and seed size is not major determining factor for increase seed yield, rather seed number per plant.

Objectives:

To examine general patterns of pod and seed growth in mungbean and to study relationship between seed growth characteristics, yield components and yield.

Methodology:

Pot experiment was conducted at the pot yard, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during the period from September 2005 to November 2005. Mungbean genotypes viz., MB-45, MB-300, BMX-9400, Binamung-2, Binamung-5 and BARImung-5 were taken as test crop. Plants were grown in pots containing 12 kg soil. Recommended fertilizer were applied for normal plant growth and development. Normal cultural practices were followed. Data for pod and seed growth studies were collected at two days interval from anthesis to maturity and those for yield components at final harvest. For each sampling 5 pods were harvested for each replication and then fresh and oven dry weight were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically.
