Effects of Some Limnological Parameters on Tiger Shrimp Penaeus Monodon Production Under Semi-intensive Culture

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Studies were conducted in the shrimp farm of the Meghna Shrimp Culture Ltd. Cox's Balar to determine some lminological and biological aspects on the growth of tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon for its semi-intensive culture. The temperature and salinity showed great influences on the growth and yield of shrimp during the study period. The growth of shrimp was retarded at temperature below 25°C, while the growth ra.te was maximum at 25°C-33°C during summer. showed good growth at 10-25 ppt salinity. Dissolved oxygen and pH were found in the range of 5.5-7.0 ppm and 7.8-B.7 respectively, throughout the study period. The yield of shrimp was depended upon size of the pond, initial stocking density and size of post larvae. The pond size around 0.4 hectare were the best for shrimp culture. Stocking density of 1,97,600 post larvae/hectare was found to produce the maximum yield of shrimp. The post larvae of 45-50 mm in body length was showed best result in obtaining maximum production of shrimp. ·

Objectives:

1. To investigate the influence of major ecological factors on the yield of shrimp (Penaeus monodon) in some selected shrimp farm in Cox 's Bazar region.

2.The effects of pond area, stocking density, the size of post larvae on the production of P. monodon under semi-intensive culture system were also studied.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted in farm of the Meghna Shrimp Culture Ltd., a Joint venture of Thailand and Bangladesh, located at the coastal belt near the Cox 's Bazar town. The farm is Situated on the bank of the river Bakkhali, just opposite to BFDC fish landing Centre and west of Khurushkul village. The total area of the farm is about 32 hectares. The farm is consisted of 27 different sized stocking ponds, 13 reservoir, a net work of feeder canal, office building, dormitories, laboratory, store house, a network of discharge canal and related facilities. It has well developed electric powered paddle wheel and pump facilities for aeration and agitation of water in each ponds. Water supply to the feeder canal is maintained directly from Bakkhali estuary during high tide by gravitational force through concrete and steel sluice gate. Intake of water to the pond is also maintained by powered electric pumps through RCC pipes during low tides. However, discharge of water is maintained by gravitational force through PVC pipes. The farm is protected by barbed wire fencing.Five stocking ponds of the farm designated as 88, 89, 810, 811, 812 were selected for the present study The procedures for the preparation of all the experimental ponds were same. Shrimp fry in the form of post larvae (PL) were collected from the subsistent fishermen.
