Correlation Study on Morphological and Yield Parameters of Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study was conducted to determine correlation among different yield contributing traits of 50 mungbean genotypes during Kharif-I growing season, 2004 and 2005. Correlation was worked out among plant height, days to flowering, days to maturity, total dry weight plot^-1, yield plant^-1, 100-grain weight, harvest index and yield ha^-1. Significant differences were observed among different populations for all the parameters. Correlation analysis revealed that earliness had negative correlation with plant height, TDM and seed yield per plant while 100-seed weight and harvest index were recorded to be positively correlated. Dry weight per plant was found to have positive correlation with days to maturity and plant height while negatively correlated with harvest index. 100-grain weight showed positive correlation with harvest index but negatively correlated with pods plant^-1 and plant height. Seed yield plant^-1 was found to be non-significantly correlated with 100-grain weight. Harvest index had significant positive correlation with seed yield plant^-1 while it had significant negative correlation with days to maturity, plant height and dry weight per plot. Similarly, seed yield per plant was positively correlated with pods plant^-1and harvest index.

Objectives:

To work out correlation among different morphological and yield characters under the climatic condition of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Fifty local and exotic genotypes of mungbean were grown in two successive seasons in the ‘Kharif-I’ (February-May), 2005 & 2006 at the Research Farm, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh. A randomised complete block design with three replications was followed in both the locations. A unit plot size of 2 m ´ 1.8 m with plant spacing of 30 cm x 10 cm was used. Cultural practices were the same in both the seasons and locations. Uniform plant stands (30 plants m^-2) were maintained in both the seasons. Urea, triple superphosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum were used as a source of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulphur at the rate of 40, 120, 80 and 30 kg ha^-1, respectively at the time of final land preparation. Recommended cultural practices were followed. Data on growth and yield contributing characters such as TDM, number of pods, seeds pod^-1, single pod and 100-seed weight, and seed yield were recorded on 10 plants from each plot. Seed yield was computed on plot yield basis and converted into kilogram hectare^-1. The collected data were analysed statistically statistically. Phenotypic and genotypic correlations were estimated according to Johnson et al. (1955). Finally, path co-efficient analysis was performed following the method of Dewey and Lu (1959).

Achievement/Findings:

Total dry mass is the most important sources that determined seed yield. Pod number is the main sink determining grain yield. Correlation and path-coefficient analysis indicated that number of pods plant^-1 and 100-seed mass contributed maximum to seed yield in mungbean.
