Flowering and Reproductive Efficiencies in 30 Elite Groundnut Mutants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study assessed reproductive efficiencies (RE) and reproductive efficiency methods (REM) in 30 elite groundnut mutants. Daily flowering pattern of the tested genotypes followed uni-, bi- and tri-modal peaks, with bimodal being the highest number irrespective of flowering peaks. All the higher yielding mutants produced higher rates of flowers within 60-70 days after sowing (DAS). Reproductive efficiency methods used for varietal discrimination for reproductive efficiency, and the RE’s effects on yield qualified REM I and REM II equally effective with REM IV as they enabled highest, higher or lower RE scorer with same order of their yielding ability. The REM appeared just reverse of REM II in RE scores of the most genotypes due to their parallel reverse estimating formulae, conforming the possible replacement of the former by the latter method. REM III did not reflect RE scores in attaining yield. Future increase in groundnut yield could be accomplished by developing cultivars which produce higher rate of flowering within 60-70 DAS with high RE scores and REM I and REM II could be effectively be used in future efforts.

Objectives:

This study focused on investigating flower production, flowering pattern, reproductive efficiency and their relationships with yield in 30 elite groundnut mutants discriminated for yields to assess yield determining factors.

Methodology:

Two pot experiments were conducted at the pot yard, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, Bangladesh in Kharif-I (February-July), season of 1995 and 1996. A completely randomized design with four replications was used in the study. The experiment consisted of thirty groundnut mutants. The pots were filled with 12 kg sandy loam soil considered proper for groundnut cultivation. The fertilizers were applied at the rate of 40, 80, 60 and 40 kg ha^-1 as urea, triple superphosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively. Ten seeds were sown in a pot after 8 hours of soaking to ensure uniform germination and, two weeks after germination, two plants pot^-1 were kept for growth and development, which denoted a replication. Irrigation, weeding, spray of insecticide were used as and when needed for normal growth and development. Flower count began from the date of opening of first flower and continued at every day until flowering ceased. Number of flowers produced at each day was averaged over 10 days interval. Flower production or flowering pattern at 10-day interval, and flowering duration were later calculated from the collected data. Per cent pod set to opened flowers, reproductive efficiency (RE) was then estimated as: % pod set = (Number of pods plant^-1 ÷ Number of opened flowers plant^-1) × 100. Four reproductive efficiencies methods were determined as suggested by Coffelt et al. (1989). During harvest time; leaf area, dry matter production, yield and yield components were recorded. The collected data were analyzed by CRD using the statistical computer package programme, MSTAT.

Achievement/Findings:

The genotypes which produced maximum flowers within 60-70 DAS also showed higher REs and seed yield. Therefore, future increase in groundnut yield could be accomplished by developing cultivars which produce higher rate of flowering within 60-70 DAS with high RE scores and REM I and REM II could be effectively be used in future efforts.
