Evaluation of Lentil Genotypes in Relation to Growth Characteristics, Assimilate Distribution and Yield Potential

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to assess growth, biochemical, yield and yield contributing characters of five exotic lentil genotypes viz., IC 44104, IC 44226, IC 44210, IC 44209, IC 44231 and one local variety L-5 under Bangladesh condition. Results demonstrated that seed yield did not depend on leaf area development, leaf area ratio, leg-haemoglubin content or nitrate reductase activity. On the other hand, total dry mass, crop growth rate, net assimilation rate, soluble protein content and harvest index showed significant and positive correlation with seed yield, indicating prime importance of photosynthetic potentials of varieties and proper distribution of assimilates towards the reproductive sink for maximal yield expression of lentil.

Objectives:

To study the physiological and biochemical relationships with seed yield in exotic lentil lines in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out with five exotic lentil genotypes with a view to evaluate their growth and yield performance under Bangladesh condition. The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during the period from November 1994 to March 1995. The experiment comprised of six genotypes/variety viz., IC 44104, IC 44226, IC 44210, IC 44209, IC 44231 and one local variety L-5. The size of the unit plot was 2 m x 2 m. Plant to plant and row to row distances were maintained at 6-8 cm and 30 cm, respectively. The doses of fertilizers were: urea 40, TSP 80, MP 60 and gypsum 40 kg ha^-1. The seeds of lentil were hand sown in rows on 02 November, 1994. To study ontogenetic growth characteristics, a total of four harvests were made and at final harvest, data were collected on some morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield. The first crop sampling was done at 50 DAS and continued at an interval of 15 and 10 days up to 95 DAS. From each plot five plants were randomly selected and uprooted for obtaining data of necessary parameters. The plants were separated into leaves, stems, roots and nodules, and the corresponding dry weights were recorded after oven drying at 80 ± 2⁰C for 72 hours. The leaf area of each sample was measured by LICOR automatic leaf area meter. Biochemical parameters (leg-haemoglubin, chlorophyll and nitrate reductase activity) were matured at 60 DAS. At harvest yield components were recorded from 10 plants of each plot. The collected data were statistically analyzed and the means were adjudged by DMRT at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

Two exotic lines, IC 44104 and IC 44231, although performing better than local check, L-5 with respect to growth and seed yield, may not be adopted in Bangladesh because of their longer duration by two weeks.
