Hybridization Between Magur, Clarias Batrachus Lin. and Shingi, Heteropneustes Fossilis Blo

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted on the hybridization between magur, Clarias batrachus, and shing,Heteropneustes fossilis and their reciprocal groups. The hybrids showed good performance when reared in laboratory and experimental ponds along with their parental groups. All the hybrids were found to be male and they did not able to contribute in fertilization of eggs of the parents as testes of males were undeveloped, whereas the eggs were successfully fertilized by the sperms of magur and shingi males Comparative sophomoric studies of both parents and hybrids were made and the hybrids exhibited Intermediate phenotypic characters studied.However, all reciprocal crosses were not viable prior to hatching.

Objectives:

To observe the possibility of hybridization between Clarias batrachus x Heteropneustes fossilis and their reciprocal groups and to compare the growth rates and survival rates of hybrids with their parents.

Methodology:

Mature male and female brood fishes of magur and shingi were kept in the ponds at the campus of Bangladesh Agricultural University. The size of the stocking ponds were 400 square metre and the fishes were kept at a density of 20,000 fish/hectare. The broods were given artificial feed with a mixture of 50% fish meal and 50% rice bran at the rate of 5-6% body weight twice daily. The water depths of the ponds were 1.22-1.53 metre in the rainy season and 0.46-0.61 metre in the winter . In the rainy season, ponds were surrounded by net to prevent the fish escape from the ponds. The fishes were collected by seine net and carried to the laboratory of Aquaculture and Management Department, Bangladesh Agricultural University and were kept in tanks until they use. Selection of Broods for Injection: Sexually ripe male and female magur and shingh were separated from the collected lots of fishes and they were mjected intramuscularly with HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) extract at the dosage of 500 I.U/100 gm body wight. The total dosage was divided equally into two and each dose (250 I.U.) was injected to males and females at 6 hours interval. Male and female were kept in separate trays after each injection. Cares w. ere taken t.o prevent fish loss by jumping. Twelve hours after the 2nd injection, ovulated eggs of magur and shingi were obtained by stripping and kept them in. separate enamel plates.
