Selection of Self-detrashing Varieties of Sugarcane

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This experiment was conducted to develop self-detrashing varieties of sugarcane at BSRI, Ishurdi, Pabna during the cropping season 2011-2012. After crossing among selected self-detrashing parents.Later on, seedlings were raised from hybrid seed. After one year, at maturity, seedlings were selected on the basis of different character specially self-detrashing characteristic and subsequent selection were made in different test stages. Collected 145.0 gms fuzz were tested and sown in seedling nursery bed. In all, 1,050 seedlings were pricked in the seedling nursery bed. Lastly, 1,010 seedlings were transplanted in the field. Totally 20 genotypes were selected as self-detrashing parents. Nine crosses were made among 7 of the selected parents.

Methodology:

At first self-detrashing parents were selected. After flowering and pollen viability test, selected parents were set in cross. The male parents were removed after two weeks when crossing is over. Hybrid seeds were harvested, defuzzed, weighed and stored in deep-freeze. Later on, test sowing of the hybrid seeds were performed in the glass-house in the month of July-August. After one week, when germination is completed mass sowing of the selected cross were made on the basis of viable seeds. The seedlings attaining a height of 2"-3" were transplanted in cell-u-pak tray in the seedling nursery bed. When the seedlings attain a height of 9"-12" each of them were transplanted in the field in furrow at 50cm distance. After one year, at maturity, seedlings were selected on the basis of different character specially self-detrashing characteristic .The selected clones were planted in first line trial - 1m × 4m test stage against one standard variety. Again after one year, selection were made considering the same characteristics including field brix. Only the good appearing clones showing equal or better field brix comparing to the standard variety were selected for advancement. The selected clones were planted in the second line trial - the 4m × 4m test stage against one/two standard variety. In the next year, the clones were evaluated on the basis of mentioned characteristics including juice analysis and estimated cane yield. Only the clones showed equal or better performance in comparison to the standard variety were selected for next trial. Then the selected materials were planted in PYT, AYT and ZYT I, II and III in successive years as per variety development procedure.
