Stability Analysis of Some Rice Genotypes for Yield in Transplant Aus Environment

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Yield stability of nine rice genotypes was studied in transplanted ecosystems of Bangladesh across three locations over three years. The RCB design was followed with three replications in nine trials (3 locations x 3 years= 9 environments). Variation due to variety, environment and variety x environment interactions were found significant. Yield of most en tries including BRRI varieties were unstable. Two entries, IR25924-51-2-3 from IRRI, Philippines and KAU 1727 from India, showed stable performance. The highest yielding entry lR7156- 120-3-2-1-1 was found unstable across environments which may be suitable as location specific variety.

Objectives:

To study the yield stability of some breeding lines and T. Aus varieties in T. Aus condition of Bangladesh and select suitable variety for this ecosystem.

Methodology:

The experiment consisted of nine entries, three from BRRI (Bangladesh), five from IRRI (Philippines) and one from India. The experiment was conducted in RCB design with three replications at three locations, namely Gazipur, Rajshahi and Comilla during 1987, 1988 and 1989. The locations with three years were considered as nine environments. The spacing was 20- x 15-cm with 2-3 seedlings/hill. The fertilizer dose was 60- 40-40 kg NPK; 100 kg Gypsum and 10 kg ZnS0₄per hectare. The dates of seeding and transplanting were 30 March to 2 May and 24 April to 29 May, respectively. Data on grain yield were taken and analysed statistically. Combine analysis was carried out to determine the proportion of variations due to environments, genotypes and interactions between them. Stability parameter-regression coefficient (b) and deviation from regression (s²d) were calculated using the Eberhart and Russel model (1966) to find out the adaptability of the entries/varieties over the environments.

Achievement/Findings:

It is evident from the study that most entries were unstable for the prediction of yield across different environments in the T. Aus season. This result differs from that of Ray et al., (1990) and Haque et al., (1991) for stability of irrigated Boro rice and T. Aman rice where s²d of most entries were insignificant. However, positive responses from lower to higher environments of the test entries were in common. The entry KAU1727 may be suitable in this ecosystem (T. A us) for its high positive and stable yield performance. IR25924-51-2-3 may be selected for its linearly stable response from low to high environments. As the performance of the highest yielding entry IR 7156-120-3-3-2-1, was variable across the environments, it may be tested for location specific trial.
