Influence of Foliar Application of Miyobi Hormone on Fruit Set and Yield in Summer Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during the period from February to June 2006 to investigate the effect of Miyobi hormone on growth, biochemical, reproductive, yield attributes and yield in tomato genotypes. The experiment comprised five levels of Miyobi concentrations viz., 0 (control), 2, 4, 6 and 8 mgL^-1and two genotypes viz., BARI tomato-5 and TM-219. The experiment was laid out in a two factors completely randomized design with six replications. Application of Miyobi increased morphological characters, growth, yield attributes and fruit yield over control. The highest TDM, AGR, biochemical parameters such as chlorophyll, nitrate reductase and total sugar, reproductive characters such as number of effective flower clusters plant^-1, flowers plant^-1 and reproductive efficiency and fruits plant^-1 were recorded in 6.0 mgL^-1 Miyobi solution sprayed on tomato plants. Control, where only water was sprayed, showed the lowest of the above parameters. The highest fruit yield was recorded in 6.0 mgL^-1 due to increased number of fruits plant^-1. Miyobi at 6.0 mgL^-1 may be used for getting maximum fruit yield in tomato.

Objectives:

To study the effectiveness of Miyobi on growth, morphological features, yield attributes and yield in summer tomato; and and to determine the optimum concentration of Miyobi for getting higher fruit yield during summer cultivation in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was carried out at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during the period from 14 February to 20 June 2006. The experiment comprised of two factors: Factor A: Five concentration of Miyobi viz., 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 mgL^-1 were applied at 25 DAT and 35 DAT i.e. before flowering and flower start stage. Factor B: Two tomato genotypes viz., BARI tomato-5 (variety) and TM-219 (mutant) were used in the experiment. The composition of the plant growth regulator, Miyobi is unknown. The formulation of Miyobi was water-soluble powder. For preparation of Miyobi working solution: 2 mg, 4 mg, 6 mg and 8 mg of Miyobi powder were added to one liter of water and spraying was done on tomato plants at afternoon by using a hand sprayer. The pots of the experiment were filled with 12 kg of soils and fertilized properly. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 6 replications. For study growth parameters, two sampling was done, 45 and 60 DAT. Biochemical parameters were recorded at 55-60 DAT. At harvest, reproductive characters, yield attributes and yield was recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Foliar application of Miyobi at vegetative and reproductive stage had significant influence on plant characters, yield attributes and fruit yield of tomato over control; and Application of Miyobi @ 6.0 mgL^-1 had superiority for plant growth, biochemical, reproductive characters, yield components and yield over 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0 mgL^-1. So, we may use 6.0 mgL^-1 of Miyobi for getting maximum fruit yield in tomato after few more field trials.
