Effect of Miyodo on Growth, Yield Attributes and Yield of Wheat Cv. Shatabdi

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of Miyodo on growth, yield attributes and yield of wheat variety cv. Shatabdi. The experiment comprised of three levels of Miyodo viz., 2, 3 and 4 mgL^-1 and fresh water as control sprayed on wheat plant at 45 days after sowing. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Results revealed that application of Miyodo increased plant height, tiller number hill^-1, leaf number as well as leaf area, leaf area index, total dry mass and crop growth rate over control being the highest in 4 mgL^-1 concentration. Further, Miyodo at 4 mgL^-1 showed the highest seed yield due to increased number of effective tillers hill^-1, spikelets spike^-1 and spikelet size followed by 3 mgL^-1. In contrast, control plants produced the lowest grain yield due to performed inferior performance in yield attributes.

Objectives:

To study the effect of different concentrations of Miyodo on growth, canopy structure, yield attributes and yield in wheat; and to find out the optimum dose of Miyodo for getting higher yield in wheat.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from November 2005 to April 2006. One popular variety of wheat namely, Shatabdi was used in the present experiment. The plant growth regulator, Miyodo is commerial name and its composition is unknown. The concentrations of Miyodo were 2, 3 and 4 mgL^-1 with a control. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. The size of the unit plot was 2 m x 1.5 m. Plant to plant and row to row distances were maintained at 5 cm and 25 cm, respectively. The dose of fertilizers was: urea 200, TSP 150 and MP 65 kg ha^-1. The formulation of Miyodo was water-soluble powder. For preparation of Miyodo working solution: 2, 3 and 4 mg of Miyodo powder were added to one liter of water and spraying was done on wheat plants at afternoon by using a hand sprayer. To study ontogenetic growth characteristics, a total of four harvests were made and at final harvest, data were collected on some morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield. The first crop sampling was done at 60 DAS and continued at an interval of 15 days up to 105 DAS. From each plot five plants were randomly selected and uprooted for obtaining data of necessary parameters. The plants were separated in to leaves, stems and roots and the corresponding dry weights were recorded after oven drying at 80 ± 2⁰C for 72 hours. The leaf area of each sample was measured by LICOR automatic leaf area meter. The growth analysis like AGR were carried out following the formulae of Hunt (1978). At harvest, yield and yield contributing characters were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

Application of Miyodo had effect on canopy structure, growth, yield attributes and yield in wheat; and application of Miyodo at the concentration of 4.0 mgL^-1 at vegetative stage on wheat had remarkable superiority for plant growth, yield components and yield over the other doses (2.0 and 3.0 mgL^-1) of Miyodo. So, Miyodo with 4.0 mgL^-1 may be applied for increased grain yield of wheat. Further study with some higher concentrations are necessary to find out the optimum dose of Miyodo for getting higher yield in wheat.
