Growth and Yield Assessment of Summer Mungbean Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during February to May 2005 to assess growth,yield and yield contributing characters of eight mungbeang enotypes viz., Binamoog-2, Binamoog-5, BARI mung-5, BARI mung-6, MBM- 298, MBM-300, E₄l- 901 and E₄l- 915. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with three replications. Leaf area, LAI and CGR increased till 55 days after sowing followed by a decline while plant height and TDM increased up to maturity. Furthermore, plant height, leaf area, root weight, TDM, LAl, CGR, RGR and NAR differed significantly at all growth stages. In contrast, RGR and NAR had initially high values which then declining in trend up to maturity. The genotype E₄l-915 showed superiority in respect of plant height, TDM, LAI, CGR, RGR and NAR at most of the growth stages whilst BARI mung-6 and MBM-300 showed the inferiority. Furthermore, E₄l- 9l 5 also showed superiority in yield and yield attributes except seed size. In contrast, B ARI mung-6 and MBM-300 showed the inferior value in case of above studied parameters. E4I- 915 may be released as improved variety after few more trials under farmers' field condition.

Objectives:

The objective of the study was to assess growth and yield contributing characters of mungbean genotypes.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during the period from 28 February to 5 May 2005 to assess growth, yield and yield contributing characters of eight mungbean genotypes viz., Binamoog-2, Binamoog-5, BARI mung-5, BARI mung-6, MBM- 298, MBM-300, E₄l- 901 and E₄l- 915. Each pot contained 10 kg of silt loam soils collected from BINA farm. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with three replications. Urea, TSP, MP and gypsum were applied at the rate of 0.70, 1.05, 0.60 and 0.80 g pot^-1 corresponding to 40, 80, 60 and 40 kg ha^-1 respectively. To study ontogenetic growth characteristics, a total of five harvests were made, data were collected on some morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield. The collected data were analyzed statistically following the analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique and the mean differences were adjusted with Duncan,s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) using the statistical computer package program, MSTAT-C.
