A Study on the Performance of Twenty Five Cabbage Hydrids

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted from September 1986 to January 1987 to find out the performance of twenty five cabbage varieties. All the varieties differed significantly with respect to all the characters studied. Among the new varieties Parad1x,Arixos, Onesh and Copenhagen Market were found to be promising with respect to yield and earliness while Anjar, Maxim and Lacerta were found as high yielding late variables.

Objectives:

To select the varieties according to the farmers preference for higher yield, earliness and compact head.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur during the period from September 1986 to January 1987. The experimental area was . medium high land. The soil was sandy foam with pH value 6.2. Twenty five varieties/lines of cabbage Including 4 recommended varieties were Included In this study. The design was randomized complete block with three replications having plot area of 5.6m x 6.6m. One month old seedlings were planted on 1st October, 1986 in plots at a spacing of 60cm x 65 em. The crop received manurers and fertilizers at the rate of 5000 kg of crow dung, 260 kg ,100 kg of P₂O₅a and 60 kg of K₂O

Achievement/Findings:

It was found that the characters like total plant weight, marketable head weight, head diameter. days to maturity and head compactness index were positively correlated with yield at 1% level of significance.
