Effect of Gamma Radiation and Datura Alkaloids on Yield and Yield Attributes of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during December 2005 to June 2006 to evaluate the effect of gamma radiation and dutura alkaloides on yield and yield components of BRRI dhan29. Thirteen doses of gamma radiation and different periods of seed soaking in dutura extracts viz., 0 Gray (Gy), 150 Gy, 150 Gy + 6 hours dutura soaking (hds), 150 Gy + 12 hds, 150 Gy + 18 hds,200 Gy,200 Gy + 6 hds, 200 Gy + 12 hds, 200 Gy + l8 hds, 250 Gy,250 Gy + 6 hds, 250 Gy + 12 hds and 250 Gy + 18 hds from ⁶⁰Co source were applied on the seeds of high yielding boro rice variety BRRI dhan29. According to the treatments, irradiated rice seeds were germinated and soaked for 6, 12 and 18 hours in the extract of dutura seeds. Data on yield and yield attributes were recorded. Results revealed that the treatment had significantly affected all the parameters studied except plant height and 1000-grain weight. The dose of 150 Gy + 12 (hds) had the highest panicles plant^-1, grains panicle-¹, grain yield plant^-1, total dry matter plant^-l and harvest index.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of different gamma radiation and datura alkaloids on yield and yield attributes of BRRI dhan29 and to select optimum dose for increasing grain yield.

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out at BINA farm, Mymensingh, during the period from December 2005 to June 2006 to evaluate the effect of gamma radiation and dutura alkaloides on yield and yield components of BRRI dhan29. Thirteen doses of gamma radiation and different periods of seed soaking in dutura extracts viz., 0 Gray (Gy), 150 Gy, 150 Gy + 6 hours dutura soaking (hds), 150 Gy + 12 hds, 150 Gy + 18 hds,200 Gy,200 Gy + 6 hds, 200 Gy + 12 hds, 200 Gy + l8 hds, 250 Gy,250 Gy + 6 hds, 250 Gy + 12 hds and 250 Gy + 18 hds from ⁶⁰Co source were applied on the seeds of high yielding boro rice variety BRRI dhan29. According to the treatments, irradiated rice seeds were germinated and soaked for 6, 12 and 18 hours in the extract of dutura seeds. The land was fertilized with 220, 120, 85 and 60 kg ha-1 of Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum, respectively. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Design with three replications. Seeds were sown on 25 December 2005. On 3rd February of 2006, 40 days old seedlings were transplanted in the puddle land with plant to plant distance 15 cm and row to row distance 20 cm. Data on yield and yield attributes were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically following the analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique and the mean differences were adjusted with Duncan,s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) using the statistical computer package program, MSTAT-C.
