Effect of Water Logging on Morpho-physiological Attributes and Yield of Sesame Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during February to May 2005 to assess the effect of water logging condition on morpho-physiological attributes and yield of sesame genotypes. Two factors, water logging (control or no water logging, 24 hour, 30 hour, 36 hour, 42 hour and 48 hour) and genotype Binatil-1, SM-l, SM-5, SM-12, SM-13) were used. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Plant height, maximum number of capsule, root, stem, leaf and capsule dry weight plant^-1, seed yield, total dry matter plant^-1 and 1000-seed weight were found in control. The values of the most parameters decreased with the increase in water logging period. The most satisfactory yield plant^-1 was obtained from the control than that of 24 hour > 30 hour > 36 hour > 42 hour and 48 hour water logging. Binatil-1 showed better performance than other genotypes.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to evaluate the effect of water logging on some morpho-physiological characters of sesame genotypes and to identify water logging genotype.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during February to May 2005 to assess the effect of water logging condition on morpho-physiological attributes and yield of sesame genotypes. Two factors, water logging (control or no water logging, 24 hour, 30 hour, 36 hour,42 hour and 48 hour) and genotype Binatil-1, SM-l, SM-5, SM-12, SM-13) were used. 'Ihe experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Each pot contained 7.5 kg of silt loam soils collected from BINA farm. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with three replications. Urea, TSP, MP and gypsum were applied at the rate of 0.31, 0.37, 0.125 and 0.31 g pot^-1 corresponding to 125, 150, 50 and 125 kg ha^-1, respectively. Seeds were sown on 22 February 2005. Data were collected on some morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield. The collected data were analyzed statistically following the analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique and the mean differences were adjusted with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) using the statistical computer package program, MSTAT-C.

SM-5 had the lowest seed yield, root weight, leaf weight and total dry matter plant^-1. SM-12 had the lowest seed yield and harvest index. SM-l3 produced medium yield performance. Binatil-1 produced the highest seed yield in control. Binatil-1 showed better performance than other genotypes.
