Evaluation of Four Advanced Lentil Mutants in Relation to Growth and Yield

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four promising lentil mutants viz., LM-115, LM-132, LM-234 and LM-20-5 along with BARImasur-4 under field condition were evaluated for morpho-physiological characters, growth and yield. Results revealed that LM-134 and LM-115 showed better performance in branch number, leaf area and TDM while LM-20-5 showed lowest performance. Similarly, the mutants LM-134 and LM-115 showed superiority in respect of growth parameters like leaf area index, crop growth rate and relative growth rate at most of the growth stages and also showed higher seed yield performance.

Objectives:

To study physiological and morphological relationship with seed yield in advanced lentil mutant lines in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out with four M5 generation lentil mutants (LM-115, LM-132, LM-234 and LM-20-5) along with BARImasur-4 with a view to evaluate their growth and yield performance. The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during the period from November 2004 to March 2005. The size of the unit plot was 3 m x 3 m. Plant to plant and row to row distances were maintained at 6-8 cm and 30 cm, respectively. The doses of fertilizers were: urea 40, TSP 80, MP 60 and gypsum 40 kg ha^-1. The seeds of lentil were hand sown in rows on 12 November, 2004. To study ontogenetic growth characteristics, a total of five harvests were made and at final harvest, data were collected on some morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield. The first crop sampling was done at 40 DAS and continued at an interval of 15 and 10 days up to 110 DAS. From each plot five plants were randomly selected and uprooted for obtaining data of necessary parameters. The plants were separated into leaves, stems, roots and nodules, and the corresponding dry weights were recorded after oven drying at 80 ± 2 ⁰C for 72 hours. The leaf area of each sample was measured by LICOR automatic leaf area meter. At harvest yield components were recorded from 10 plants of each plot. The collected data were statistically analyzed and the means were adjudged by DMRT at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

The genotype which shows superiority in leaf area index and crop growth rate, also shows higher seed yield in lentil. This information may be used in the future plant breeding programme.
