Effect of Nitrogen on Dry Matter Distribution and Yield Potential in Potato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of fertilizer-N on dry matter production, distribution and yield in potatoes. Two varieties, namely Cardinal and Diamant and five levels of fertilizer-N viz. 0, 100. 125, 150 and 175 kg ha^-1 were applied under this study. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with factorial (fertilizer-N and varieties) having three replications. Dry matter production capacity i.e. tuber fresh weight (TFW), tuber dry weight (TOW), FW/DW ratio, shoot dry weight, total dry matter (TOM) and yield were significantly influenced by the application of different levels of N-fertilizers. The highest yield contributing characters and yield were found from the plants, which were treated with 150 kg N ha^-1. The results concluded that application of 150 kg N na^-1 showed the highest dry matter production potential, best yield and yield components of potato varieties, Cardinal and Diamant.

Objectives:

To identify nitrogen efficient variety of potato and optimum doses of N-fertilizer application for maximum yield of potato by observing the growth and dry matter distribution.

Methodology:

The pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh and the crop used in this study was potato (Solanum tuberosum) varieties Cardinal and Diamant. The seeds were collected from the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation, Mymensingh, Bangladesh. Pots contained a top diameter 30 cm, bottom diameter l5 cm and height of the pot was 26 cm. The design of the experiment was randomized complete block with factorials having three replicates. The seeds were sown during 23^rdNovember by hand at the rate of 1.5 t ha^-1 i.e. 3 eyes pot^-1. Five levels of N-fertilizers namely 0, 100, 125, 150, 175 kg N-ha^-1 were imposed in this experiment. The whole amount of triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MOP), and gypsum were mixed with the soil as basal dose during land preparation. Tuber fresh weight was determined by balance just after harvesting and sun dried tuber, root and shoot samples were kept in an electric oven at 80°C temperature for 72 hours, thereafter samples were cooled and weight were taken with an electronic balance for their dry weight. Percent dry matter (% DM) in root, shoot and tuber were calculated as follows: Root, shoot and tuber dry weight separately divided by TDM and multiplied by 100. The collected data were statistically analyzed to find out the level of significance by using MSTAT-C package programme developed. The mean differences were compared by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (DMRT) and regression at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

The achievement indicated that tuber fresh yield, dry yield, total dry matter were significantly increased with increasing rates of N from 0 to 150 kg ha^-1 and decreased thereafter. In tuber yield, a curvilinear relation was found, which indicated that more than 150 kg N ha^-1 plant consumed that as luxury consumption. Application of 150 kg N ha^-1 showed the best performance of maximum parameter and yield. Thus, application of 150 kg N ha^-1 might be a recommended dose for maximum tuber yield of potato varieties, Cardinal and Diamant.
