Effect of Nitrogen Topdressing at the Full Heading Stage of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The importance of nitrogen fertilizer for increasing rice yield has been widely recognized. But the efficiency of the applied N is very low, ranging from 30 to 40%. A field experiment was conducted at the BRRI farm Gazipur, during the Boro season, 1988 to determine the effect of N top-dressing at the full heading stage on the yield and yield components of BR14. The soil was clay loam with pH 6.4 and 0.098% of N. The experiment was laidout in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Data on plant height, grain yield and yield components were recorded and analysed following standard statistical procedures. Results indicated that the N top-dressing at the full heading stage did not increase grain yield as such the technique might not be found suitable for Bore rice under Bangladesh condition.

Objectives:

To determine the effect of N top-dressing at the full heading stage on the yield and yield components of BR14.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at the BRRI farm Gazipur, during the Boro season, 1988 to determine the effect of N top-dressing at the full heading stage on the yield and yield components of BR14. The soil was clay loam with pH 6.4 and 0.098% of N. The experiment was laidout in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4- x 3-m. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 80-60-40 kg N, P₂0₅ and K₂0/ha as urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash, respectively. N was top-dressed at the different growth stages as per treatments and phosphorus and potassium as basal. Two to three 45-day-old seedlings of BR14 were transplanted at a spacing of 25- x 20-cm. Other cultural practices were followed as and when necessary. Data on plant height, grain yield and yield components were recorded and analysed following standard statistical procedures.
