Selection of Desirable Mutants from M2 Generation of Chickpea Based on Morpho-physiological Characters.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was undertaken to evaluate the performance of M₂ generation of chickpea viz., Binasola-2 and BARIsola-3 with four doses of gamma rays: control, 200 Gy, 300 Gy and 400 Gy. Different morpho-physiological parameters were collected for this study. The highest dose of gamma rays (400 Gy) produced the tallest plant (59.30 cm) by mutants of Barisola-3. Desirable mutants with better yield were found from 200 Gy and 300 Gy of Binasola-2. The highest number of pods per plant including unfilled pod, (85.38), seeds per plant (68.88), 100 seed weight (23.22 g) and seed yield per plant (15.70 g) were observed from 200 Gy doses of gamma ray. The lowest number of seeds per plant (48.56) was found in 400 Gy with respect to seed yield of chickpea. 200 Gy dose showed the best followed by 300 Gy in Binasola-2. Thus the induced mutation has capability to create variability and there is an ample scope for selecting desirable mutants of chickpea. Finally, on the basis of seed yield per plant and early maturity, 7 mutants were selected from M₂ generation. These mutants will be tested for selecting true breeding lines in M₃ generation.

Objectives:

To observe the effect of different doses of gamma rays on morphological and physiological characters of M₂ generation of chickpea; and to select the desirable M₂ chickpea mutants based on morpho-physiological characters.

Methodology:

The present study was conducted at farmer’s field in Barind area (Godagari, Rajshahi) during the period from 11 November, 2006 to 18 April, 2007 to observe the morphological variations, yield and yield contributing characters of M₂generation of chickpea developed through different doses of gamma rays. In this study mutants developed from two parental cultivars will be selected. The experiment consisted with two varieties of chickpea viz., Binasola-2 and Barisola-3 and four doses of gamma rays viz., control, 200 Gy, 300 Gy and 400 Gy. The mutants developed from each parental cultivar were compared with their respective parent separately for both the Binasola-2 and Barisola-3. The number of variants were 60 and two parental cultivars were used as checks for identification of the desirable mutants. Fertilizers were applied uniformly according to the recommendation of BINA chickpea booklet. The line to line distance of 40 cm and plant to plant distance were 15 cm. Data were collected from 10 randomly selected plants and selected desirable mutants plants after harvesting from each dose of gamma irradiated plants. Different morpho-physiological characters were studied from different doses of gamma rays.

Achievement/Findings:

The induced mutation technique is effective tool for creating genetic variability in improving the qualitative and quantitative characters of chickpea. The M₂ mutants developed from Binasola-2 were found to be higher yield. Gamma rays is a potential mutagen which could modify the morpho-physiological characters and help in selecting the desirable chickpea mutants with higher seed yield potential up to a certain level. On the basis of seed yield per plant and early maturity, 7 mutants were selected from M₂ generation. These mutants will be tested for selecting true breeding mutants in M₃ generation.
