Quantitative Analysis on the Reproductive Potentialities of Different Genotypes of Cattle in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Studies were conducted to find out the effect of various genetic and non genetic factors on reproductive performance of pure and crossbreed cattle maintained at Central Cattle Breeding Station, Savar , Dhaka. For a total of 113 cows, records were analysed using statistical least square procedure for service per conception, gestation period, lactation length, dry period, and calving interval. Service per conception and gestation period were non-significantly effected by both genetic and non-genetic groups. Genotype, parity. year of calving and season of calving had significant effect on lactation length, dry period and calving interval. For all traits , 1/2 l- 1 /2 F genotype had the better performances than other genotypes, (Local, Holstein Friesian. Jersey,Shindhi, Sahiwal. 1 /2L- 112J, 112S-112F. 112Sh- 1 /2F,1 /2L- 1 /2F). Therefore, it may be concluded that 1/2L-1 /2F genetic group would be most suitable for better reproductive performance under the improved management and environmental conditions of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To see the effect of various genetic and non-genetic factors on the reproductive performance.
To compare the performance of various pure and crossbred animals in order to find out the best genotype in terms of each trait.

Methodology:

The data for this study were taken from the records of the Central Cattle Breeding Station (CCBS). Savar, Dhaka. A total of 113 cows were considered to evaluate their reproductive performance such as service per conception. gestation period. lactation length, dry period and calving interval during the period of 1974 to 1987. The experimental animals were divided into 9 groups according to the different genotypes such as Local ( l). Sahiwal (Sh) , Shindhi (S), Jersey (J). Holstein Friesian (F). 1/ 2L-1 /2F, 1 / 2L-1/ 2J. 1 / 2Sh- 1/2F. 1/2S- 1/ 2F. A year was classified into 3 different seasons i.e. March to June as season-1, July to October season- 2 and November to February as season- 3. All the calves born during the period from 1981 to 1992 "'within these three seasons and 1 to 9 calving number was considered. Standard conditions of feeding and management practices were adopted for all animals during the whole period. For all traits abnormal data were omitted from the analysis. The data were analysed by the least squares and maximum likelihood method using linear fixed model for all traits, The sub-class means for the significant factors were compared using least significant difference (LSD) .

Achievement/Findings:

Genetic and non-genetic factors had no significant effect on service per conception. This variation may be due to poor quality semen, lack of skilled technician or cows, internal abnormalities. The gestation period of different genotypes varied from 272 to 276 days. The average lactation length was 274 days. The highest lactation length was observed in Sahiwal and second highest in 1/2L-1/2F. The lowest lactation length was in Local differed significantly (P <0.05). The dry period of Local cows was very long in comparison to that of other pure and crossbred cows. Sahiwal had the highest calving interval (528.37 days) and lowest in 1 /2L- 1/2F ( 412.10 days).
