Studies on the Biology of Sugarcane Top Shoot Borer. Scirpophaga Monostigma Zeller (lepidoptera Pyralidae)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Biology of sugarcanes top shoot borer, Scirpophag6 monostlgmu Zeller was studied both under laboratory and field conditions. The adult moth is medium sized with white wings. The male and female measure on an average 12.00 mm. and 14.00 mm respectively. The tip of the anal tuft in female is oragne in color. The average longevity of male is 2.7 days and the female 4.6 days. Mating takes place within 24 hours of emergence. Pre-oviposition period found to vary from one to two days. Eggs era laid in batches contain· ing 20 to 25 eggs. Oviposition continued for two to three days. The number of eggs laid by each female is from 40 to 90. Eggs hatch within 7 to 9 days. The full grown larva is creamy yellowish, average length of 19.5 mm. Larvae a r e responsible e to damage the young shoots.

Objectives:

To study on the biology of sugarcane top shoot borer.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted In the laboratory of Entomology Department ·and Agricultural Farm of Bangiadash Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Newly emerged adult male and female sugarcane top shoot borer moths were collected from the field as well as from potted Infested plants in laboratory. For correct identification of the specie Hampson's method (1896) were followed. The live adults in individual pairs, were than kept in glass jars as well as in the potted non infested plants covered by wire·nets. The potted plants were on an average, one and half feet in length. Observations were made on the mating,pre oviposition, oviposition and on the longevity of the adults.Record were also maintained on the number of eggs, hatching and duration of first larval stages. Soon after hatchiny, the larvae from the glass jars were released on the leaves of the non-infested potted plants with the help of a soft camel-hair brush. Five larvae were released on each plant and was replicated ten times. Observations were made on the behavior and mode of entry in the host plant. After entrance in the top shoot the subse quent stages of the Iife cycle was studied by cutting the Infested stem of the sugarcane. Fifty infested plants were collected from the field. Infested plants could easily be recognized by the appearance of 'dead hearts' and other external symptoms.The infested plants were cut open very carefully to locate the exact position of the larva. Without disturbing the larva the total length was recorded.

The adult of sugarcane top shoot borer is medium sized with white wings. The male and female measure 12.00 mm and 14.00 mm respectively .The tip of the anal tuft in female is orange red in color, which is regarded as the characteristic feature of the female. The male posse sses a black dot on each of the fore wings. The female lives longer than the male. The average longevity of male and female it 2.7 days and 4.5 daye, respectively.Mating takes place within 24 hours of the emergence. Dark condition Is preferable for mating and lasts for about half an hour. After mating, the male usually dies within eight to twenty hour. Pra-oviposition period found to vary from one to two days. Eggs are laid in batches contain ing 20 to 25 eggs. Oviposition continued for two to three days under laboratory conditions. The number of eggs laid by each female varied from 40 to 90. Eggs hatched within 7 to 9 days. The newly hatched caterpillar Is on an average, 2.50 mm in length and 0.34 mm in breadth. Cervical shield is shiny black.
