Evaluation of Fifteen M5 Generation Lentil Mutants Based on Growth, Yield Attributes and Seed Yield

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out in Rabi season of 2006-07 to investigate variability and correlation for morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield of 16 lentil mutants/cultivar. Results revealed high yielding genotypes, in general, showed taller plant, higher number of branches/plant, greater leaf area index, TDM production and higher AGR than in the low yielding ones. In terms of seed yield, two mutants, LM-31 and LM-44 produced higher seed yield attributed for higher number of pods. In contrast, LM-135 and LM-201 produced lower seed yield due to production of fewer pods and smaller seed sizes. Seed yield and pod number had highly positive and significant correlation with branch number and TDM, and TDM depends on LAI and AGR indicating yield could be increased by increasing dry matter production through increase LAI and AGR. Hence these traits could be used for improvement of seed yield resulting in the evolution of high yielding varieties of lentil.

Objectives:

To assess variability and correlation of various morpho-physiological parameters and seed yield in some lentil mutants.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted at research farm of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during winter season of 2006-07. Fifteen M₇ generation lentil mutants (LM-2, LM-10, LM-17, LM-31, LM-44, LM-51, LM-56, LM-65, LM-68, ML-73, LM-84, LM-110, LM-114, Lm-135, LM-201) developed by γ-irradiation was evaluated in this study. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. The unit plot size was 2.0 m × 1.8 m with plant spacing of 30 cm × 5-6 cm. Recommended intercultural practices were followed. To study ontogenetic growth characteristics, a total of six harvests were made. Ten plants were randomly sampled for growth parameters from 40 DAS and continued at an interval of 10 days up to 90 DAS. The plants were separated into roots, stems, leaves and pods, and the corresponding dry weights were recorded after oven drying at 80 ± 2⁰C for 72 hours. The growth analysis was carried out following the formulae of Hunt (1978). Leaf area of each sample was measured at 90 DAS. The yield contributing characters were recorded at harvest from ten competitive plants of each plot. The seed yield was recorded from five rows of each plot (1.5 m × 2.0 m) and converted into seed yield ha^-1. All data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the 16 mutants/cultivar, LM-44 and LM-31 showed superiority in morpho-physiological characters which resulted higher seed yield. This information may be used for future plant breeding programme in lentil.
