Evaluation of Mustard and Rapeseed Genotypes in Respect to Their Morphological, Reproductive and Yield

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to investigate canopy structure, flower production, reproductive efficiency, yield attributes and their relationship with seed yield in 20 mustard/rapeseed genotypes under three species of Brassica napus, B. juncea and B. campestris. Results revealed that plant height, number of primary branches plant^-1, TDM plant^-1, TRU, RE, number of siliqua plant^-1, siliqua length and 1000-seed weight were the highest in B. campestris which resulted highest seed yield plant^-1 as well as seed yield hectare^-1 followed by B. napus. In contrast, B. juncea performed inferiority in above studied parameters and produced the lowest seed yield. B. napus took the lowest days to maturity (89 days) while B. juncea took the highest (100 days). Increased branch number, total dry mass, TRU, siliqua number, siliqua length was positively and significantly correlated with seed yield in all the three species and thousand-seed weight was negatively associated with seed yield. The mutant MM 09-02rb maintained superiority in most of the studied parameters and produced the highest seed yield (2.45 t ha^-1).

Objectives:

To assess the performance of ten promising mustard/rapeseed mutants along with ten existing varieties on the basis of morpho-physiological, reproductive efficiency and yield attributes. To investigate nature of association between seed yield and different yield contributing characters in 20 mustard/rapeseed genotypes; and to select better genotypes in respect of superior grain yield and plant architecture.

Methodology:

Ten advanced lines along with 10 mustard/rapeseed varieties were used as treatment in the present study. They were MM 49-3-98, MM 25-11-98rb, MM 48-19, MM 02-02rb, MM 06-02rb, MM 09-02rb, MM 011-02rb, BARI sarisha 8, BINA sarisha 4, BINA sarisha 5, MM 03-05, MM 05-05, MM 04-04, NAP3, RAI 5, BARI sarisha 10, BINA sarisha 6, Agrani, Safal and Sonali. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. The size of the unit plot was 2 m x 2 m. Total amount of TSP, MP, gypsum, Borax and half urea were applied at basal doses during final land preparation. The rest half urea were applied as top dress at 21 days after sowing. The doses of fertilizers were: urea 250, TSP 160, MP 80, gypsum 180 and Borux 2.0 kg ha^-1. Before harvest the plots, 10 plants were randomly selected from each plot for collecting morphological, reproductive and yield contributing characters. The plot yield was converted into kg/ha. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

High yielding genotypes produced higher number of branches, TDM and TRU which resulted higher number of siliqua plant as well as seed yield and reverse results were also observed in low yielding genotypes. Among the yield attributes, siliqua number was the main yield contributing characters which depend to TRU plant^-1. The mutant MM 09-02rb performed the best in respect of reproductive characters, yield and yield contributing characters with moderate canopy structure and also matured earlier (90 days).
