An experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. during the period from December 2003 to May 2004 to find out the effect of sowing date and variety on soybean seed yield. Five sowing dates viz, 2 December, 17 December, I January, 16 January and 31 January and two soybean varieties viz. Shohag (PB-I) and Bangladesh Soybean-4 (G-2) were included as experimental treatments. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. The highest seed yield (221.11 g m-2) was obtained from 17 December sowing, which was 16. 23. 28 and 32% higher than that of 1 January, 16 January, 31 January and 2 December sowings, respectively. On an average, G-2 gave 21 % higher seed yield than PB-I. The interaction between sowing date and variety revealed that the highest seed yield was obtained from G-2 when sown on 2 December and that for PB-I obtained from 17 December sowing.

To find out the effect of sowing dates on yield and yield attributes of two soybean varieties.

A field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from December 2003 to May 2004. The site belongs to the Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (AEZ9) having Non calcareous Dark Grey Floodplain soils. The experiment consisted of five sowing dates viz. 2 December (SI), 17 December (S2), 1 January (S3), 16 January (S4) and 31 January (S5) and two varieties of soybean viz. Shohag (PB-l) and Bangladesh soybean-4 (G-2). The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. The sowing dates were allocated in the main plots and varieties in the sub-plots. The total amount of N, P2O5, K2O and S@ 27,77,66 and 14 kg ha-1, respectively were applied in the form of Urea, Triple super phosphate, Muriate of potash and Gypsum during final land preparation at each sowing date (BARl, 2002). Seeds were sown at 30 cm apart rows using 60 kg seed for PB-l and 50 kg seed for G-2 ha-1 as per recommendation of BART (2002). High seed rate was used to ensure adequate plant population in each plot. Seeds were placed in the furrows and leveled by hand after sowing. Intercultural operations were done uniformly in all plots as and when necessary. The crop was hand harvested from the central area 3.6 (3mx1.2 m) of each plot at full maturity (i.e. when 95% pods became brown in colour). The first harvesting date was 31 March and last harvesting date was 4 May. The harvested crop was then brought to the threshing floor and dried for two to four consecutive days. The crop samples were dried in the sun and the seeds were separated from the pods by hand. Then the weights of cleaned and dried seed and stover were recorded plot wise. Just prior to harvest, randomly selected 10 sample plants were uprooted from each unit plot to collect data on yield and yield components. All the recorded data were analyzed by using the analysis of variance technique and differences among treatment means were adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test by using a computer based statistical analysis package program (MST AT).

The present study revealed that sowing earlier and later than 17 December decreased seed yield. The yield decreased in early sowing might be related to reduction in number of pods plant-1 and also number of branches plant-1. The highest biological yield (436.28 g m-2) was found in 17 December sowing. The lowest (360.56 g m-2) biological yield was observed in 2 December sowing. The highest harvest index (50.11%) was observed in 17 December sowing and the lowest one (37.89%) was obtained in 31 January sowing and indicated that the response of two varieties were different to sowing date in the same location. The result also showed that PB-l gave the highest yield (234.44 g m-2) in 17 December sowing. The highest harvest index (56.04%) was observed in PB-l with 17 December sowing, which was statistically identical with 1 January sowing in variety PB-l. The lowest harvest index (29.78%) was found in PB-l when sown on 2 December. Therefore, it could be concluded based on the present study that the highest soybean yield could be obtained by sowing between 2 December and 17 December for G-2 and between 17 December and 16 January for PB-1.
