Morpho-physiological Evaluation of Fine Grain Aromatic Rice Genotypes for Higher Yield and Short Duration

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the field laboratory of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during aman season (July to December 2005) to assess morphophysiological, yield and yield contributing characters of five promising fine grain rice mutants viz., RM 100-1, RM 100-16, RM 100-18, RM 100-24 and RM 150-10 along with the mother (check), Ukunimadhu. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Results revealed that the morphological, physiological, biochemical, yield and yield attributes were significantly different among the genotypes. The mutant RM 100-24 showed superiority in respect of morphophysiological parameters like tiller number hill^-1, leaf area, root volume and root dry weight, TDM, CGR and RGR at most of the growth stages. Furthermore, RM 100-24 also showed superiority in yield contributing characters over the other five genotypes and it resulted in the highest grain yield, while RM 150-10 showed the lowest. The mutant lines required shorter days to maturity (range 137-145 days) than Ukunimadhu (149 days) with being the lowest in RM 100-1 (137 days).

Objectives:

To assess the performance of five promising aromatic rice mutants along with the mother variety, Ukunimadhu on the basis of morphological, physiological and yield attributes. To select better genotypes in respect of superior morphophysiological characters and grain yield, and short duration.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Crop Physiology Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during the period from July 2005 to December 2005. The treatment of this experiment consisted of six promising mutants of aromatic rice viz. RM 100-1, RM 100-16, RM 100-18, RM 100-24, RM 150-10 and a check Ukunimadhu. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block design with three replications. The size of the unit plot was 3.0 m ´ 3.0 m. Hill to hill and row to row distances were maintained at 15 cm and 20 cm, respectively. The dose of fertilizers was: urea 86, TSP 65, MP 135 and gypsum 45 kg ha^-1 (BARC, 2005). Total amount of TSP, MP, gypsum, borax and 33% of urea were applied at basal doses during final land preparation. The remaining 66% urea was top dressed in two equal splits at 18 and 45 days after transplanting. At harvest, five hills were randomly selected from each plot and tagged for recording necessary data. The plot yield converted into t/ha. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Out of five mutants, RM 100-24 showed showed superiority with respect to many characters viz. yield attributes (Number of effective tillers hill^-1, number of grains panicle^-1), biochemical characters (Chlorophyll, total sugar and soluble protein), seven days earlier maturity and grain yield compared to its mother, Ukunimadhu which reflected that RM 100-24 was selected effectively to be a physiological superior mutant. The results need to be verified in farmers’ field conditions at different agro-ecological zones of the country.
