Production Potential and Economics of Wheat Based Intercropping System Under Rainfed Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiments were conducted during rabi seasons of 1992-93 and 1993-94 to assess the comparative performance of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) based inter cropping system under rainfed condition. lntercropping with wheat was more profitable than cultivation of wheat alone. lntercropping of wheat + chickpea (2:1) was more productive and remunerative with 3.75 t/ha grain in wheat equivalents and with net return Tk. 15441/ha. This net return was 118.77 % higher over net return under sole wheat. Chickpea intercropped with wheat with the profit of Tk. 4.60 per taka invested proved to be more profitable.

Objectives:

To assess the comparative performance of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) based intercropping system under rainfed condition.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Jessore during rabi seasons of 1992-93 and 1993-94 to find out the most productive and remunerative combination of inter cropping system with wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under rainfed condition. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The unit plot size was 5 m x 4 m. The crops included in the experiment were wheat (cv. Kanchan), mustard (cv. Daulat ), linseed (cv. Nila), lentil (cv. Utfala) and chickpea (c v. Nabin). The treatments were : 1. Wheat + mustard ( 2:1), 2. Wheat+ linseed ( 2:1). 3. Wheat+ chickpea (2:1). 4. Wheat+ lentil (2:1) and 5. Sole wheat. One row mustard or linseed or lentil or chickpea were sown in alternate row with two rows of wheat in the respective inter crop combination (2 :1). Seeds were sown manually@ 120,10,8, 30 and 45 kg /ha of wheat, mustard, linseed, lentil and chickpea, on 15 and 13 November in 1992 and 1993, respectively. As a basal dose N, P, K , S and Zn were applied@ 60:60:40:20:5 kg per hectare in the form of urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and zinc sulphate for sole wheat and inter crop combinations during final land preparation. Ten plants of each crop were selected randomly from individual plot to collect data on yield attributes. Yield data were calculated on the whole plot basis. Wheat equivalent yield was calculated considering the market price of respective product during the harvesting period. Wheat equivalent yield was calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

Highest grain yield of wheat (2.35 t /ha) was recorded from sole crop in 1993 - 94 but the highest grain yield of wheat ( 1.82 t /ha) was obtained from the inter crop combination of wheat+ chickpea (2:1) closely followed by sole wheat ( 1 .81 t/ha) during 1992-93. Sole wheat gave the highest grain yield (2.08 t/ha). Under inter cropping system wheat+ chickpea proved a better-yielding combination with wheat grain yield of 1.72 t/ha while wheat+ mustard yielded the lowest ( 1.40 t/ha) (pooled data of two years). Inter cropping system gave higher wheat equivalent in comparison to sole wheat. Wheat+Chickpea (2:1) gave the maximum net return ( Tk .15441/ha) as well as benefit cost ration 4.60. From the results it may be concluded that inter cropping pulses and oilseeds is profitable than cultivation of wheat alone. Wheat+ chickpea combination may be chosen for better economic performance.
